Wondering what others use to scribe lines on steel. I've used the old soapstone which is great for rough lines.  But what do you guys use for precision fine lines on steel?  I get the big wide white line with soapstone (even when I manually taper it) that's around 1/8" wide and is anything but precise.  Thanks.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:A 3/32 tungsten in a pin vise.  It works great!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:Rough-soap stone. Medium-colored pencils.Fine-fat permanent marker then carbide scribe.I'm too much of a slob to have Dykem.
Reply:As said above or just use quick dry primer and a scribe. The machinist where I used to work used a product like this but I did not like is as well as really sharp soapstone:http://www.markal.com/welding-marker...rker-flat-red/
Reply:You can also scribe it, go over it with soapstone then dust it off with your hand and your and voila, you have a crisp sharp white line.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:ALL I use is sharpies in the shop. For the fine lines I use the new sharpies. For the rough ones I use the older sharpies. I always mark so my measurement is at one side of the sharpie line so when I cut down the middle of the line I get my perfect measurement on the one edge.

Reply:I use marking pencils from markal or metal marking "silver" or "gold" sharpies, for coarse marking I use their ball valve paint markers.  The marking pencils make the finest marks if you keep them sharpened up.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Mainly sharpies. The shop ime at uses several different color sharpies, each color stands for a different part or size whole to or whatever need be. We always go on the left side of the line. It is very confusing when they started it but now that I know what each one stands for its like second nature and makes things easy. For the fine stuff we use scribes. Its rare I use soapstone.PROUD   AMERICAN
Reply:A properly sharpened soapstone is easily good to plus or minus a 64th.   After that I use a shop made carbide tipped scriber.
Reply:The majority of the time I use soapstone for general and a carbide tipped scribe for precision work.I found a place that sells gross boxes of soapstone pretty cheap. My fitter buddy said as long as it's natural, and not synthetic. I never knew there was more than one kind. Anybody else?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:For laying out holes that need to match something and laying out things to cut precise with plasma- carbide scribe but never really use blueFor rusty metal and torch lines- soapstoneSharpie for most everything else.Really just depends on the level of precision you need.

Reply:A mix of soap stone black sharpies and silver sharpies. For tight tolerance parts just remember wich side of line to cut or grind to and leave your line. I don't have any mills or lathes so my method works good so far for me.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
Reply:Even on the lathe I use a sharpie most of the time. Here I was using a sharpie to mark the high side of a twisted shaft for press straitening.
Reply:I make a swath with a white paint marker, then use a clicker pen to refine precise marks. I've been using clicker pens since before I ever got a welder, when I was doing carpentry. And soap stones, sharpies, pencils, scribes, utility knives...whatever is near. I hardly ever use spray paint anymore...City of L.A.
