I bought this old welder for $50.00 because it came with 75 feet of number one leads in like new condition. After playing with it for awhile I noticed it had an outstanding arc.I decided to take the cover off and give it a good cleaning, I couldn't tell what was what as it was covered with an inch of white dust. After cleaning it looks to be in good shape. Somethings I noticed:It's all copper wire, probably why it welds so good.It has one heavy duty rectifier:And it has a square box under the fan that I have no idea what it is?does anyone know what the box under the fan is, I'm guessing it's a hot start.Any help is appreciated Attached Images
Reply:That's a capacitor under the fan. It also looks like the rectifier is selenium instead of diodes (one of the reasons it's so big). One word of warning is don't breath the smoke if the rectifier ever blows.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:They're all wrong, it's a extra 50# can of 7018 for emergency purposes only. Kinda like hiding money in your wallet!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:That looks like the Miller 180 Amp AC/DC. If so,I have the Airco version of that machine. Sliding shunt block and plug in lead connectors with carry handles on the sides...tough old welding box. You did great on that deal ! Great welder for cheap and "free" leads...nice !
Reply:That is something else, cool to see thanks. Not going to find that transformer at the radio shack.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems

Reply:I have the Sureweld SU-185 version of that welder. That selenium rectifier went out on me last week when I noticed I wasn't the only one making arc welding noises.  I have ordered some bridge rectifiers to replace the old rectifier. It probably isn't worth the effort monetarily but it has been in our family since the early 70's and I hate to see it scraped.
