Reply:i just  wet myself im so happy to see someone can still draw with a pencil ..nice rack too
Reply:Looks alright to me! I'm making one right now for my pickup...Miller Performance AD Helmet - Camo Edition Soon to have: Jackson HSL 100 - Forest Digi CamoMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC((Currently at welding school))
Reply:Looks like a good design. Is it all in the vertical, or are the 2 peices on the edges going to angle down and back to the bedrails? Have you ever thought about adding a sliding mesh section to the center where the sliding back glass would be? That would give you the option of leaving it open for visibility or close it for maximum glass protection. You might also consider adding the third brake light in the center of the rack unless one of the two on each outside end will serve this purpose, and maybe some cargo lights.
Reply:Looks good to me,  I too draw the old fashioned way with a Architect Engineer Scale and pencil.  I cant figure out that CAD stuff.  Are you planning on making it out of Aluminum or Steel? Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:pencils the way to go. im planning on making it out of steel
Reply:If you dont mind What did your materials cost?  The reason I ask is because I designed one for my Truck (99 Cummins)  and the Steel supplier gave me an outrageous qoute for steel.  Mine is alittle different than yours, but looks very similar. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:i havent priced it out yet

Reply:x3 on the pencil and kudos on the gridpad.  Been doin' it since the mid 60's.  Started learning Sketchup, but haven't had any real job to use it on, so I quit.  I am all the way to AutoCAD 2002 on the computer however!   The pencil in the pic is especially for Architects & Engineers - it has an "endless eraser"!    as well as a full clip [dozen] leads! The rack:  is it really only 40" between the stops at the top?  Is that enough? The verts:  are you going to build your own taper tube?  If so, would it be cooler to make it 3d in the side elevation like Bistineau asked?  Kinda like that plate bumper look http://www.fabfours.com/  ???The joint between the sloping uprights and the top crossbar by the backup lights:  if that's in the same plane, it won't show very well.  Ditto with the center uprights to the diagonals to the top bar.  To see them more accurately, erase the lines between them, and see if you still like it.Mesh sections:  big expanded metal like 1.5"x9ga?  Or something exotic like woven wire fabric?  Looks like a good start, good luck and have fun!  Attached Images
Reply:Nice Rack...  Looks 'stout' too! There is a few that I've seen that have a slight bend or 'join' near the bottom and/or near the top of the support tubing so that the rack follows the contour of the outside of the cab..  They tend to DRAMATICALLY cut down on 'wind whistle' (drag).http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=headache+rack(third photo down)http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=headache+rackCheers, Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:looks good!  Guy I worked for up north drew up all the drawings that I would get with pen and paper.  There is something to be said about a pen-and-paper drawing as opposed to computer drawn!
Reply:i like your design better than most ive seen around here lately. what kind of truck are you building them for?
Reply:Looks good, you might try to make the angles of the 2 outer uprights closely match the angle of the cab. the link below that jman posted is one i did. somewhere i have where i drew it up.  Originally Posted by jmanhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=headache+rack
Reply:im building it for an 06 chevy silverado. yeah thats the plan the 2 outer uprights will be the same angle as the cab
Reply:As another frequent user of "Cave Man CAD" (Graph Paper) here is the link to the site that I download and print Isometric Graph Paper from.http://www.waterproofpaper.com/graph...ic-paper.shtmlYes, drawing Isometric Drawings on Square Grid paper works, by why not use the proper paper designed for it?I keep a quantity of the Vertical and Horizontal Isometric paper on hand at work and at home.Have a Good NightLater,Jason
Reply:any suggestions on how to get the angle of the cab for the two outer up rights?
Reply:A straight edge across the top of the bed and a bevel gauge will do it.   Eyeball it from the back of the truck. You could also make a 1/4" plywood pattern either hot glued or screwed together.

Reply:Protractor and a sliding t-bevel as stated.
Reply:ok thanks
Reply:You can forgo the protractor is you get one of these, http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/pag...,50298&p=69055It is pretty cool and works well.-g
