(Wooden) welding fixturesI've searched for this and not found much on it.I've got some pieces to do, maybe 5 to 20 of one type, 20 to 50 of another, I have to measure layout and arrange them first as it's possible to have the parts wrong way,  upside down, whatever.I did one backwards and it was a real pain.I'd like to setup a little fixture or jig to hold the parts in the right positions and distances. Before I spend big time and $ on a permanent fixture, I"m thinking of doing it in wood.Maybe as a temp solution, or if it works well, maybe as a permanent solution. How common is it to use wood? How do you keep it from burning,-Is a quick water dunk reasonable ?How do you keep it all straight, wood warps and such.If you have photos or threads that give tips or examples, I'd love to see it.Maybe a link to a book  or video ?

Reply:You've got a good memory, Ed.  I think it's pretty common with fences.  But I certainly didn't know it at the time -- since this was basically my first project after buying a welder.  What I set up was pretty simple -- pieces held the upper and lower horizontals in a fixed position, and also the bottom of each picket.  The spacers between pickets were uniform and made it easy to weld them all in a hurry. My mistake?  I made the bottom end of the pickets perfect, which meant slight variations in the picket/finial lengths more apparent when your eyeline goes along the top of the fence.  If I did it again, I'd have the tops be perfect and the bottom end be less so.Here's the thread.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-first-projectIf I'd thought about how many individual welds were going to be involved, I probably would have chosen something less ambitious as a first project.  But the fence is still doing great, over four years later.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:Im pretty sure the guys who build rag and tube aircaft use wooden jigs and fixtures to tack their 4130 steel fuselages. Then they weld the stucture outside of the jig.
Reply:I use them on unique jobs that will be one-off.  Common in bicycle jigs too. Also, much easier to mill wood with hand tools that steel.
Reply:Yes, wood fixtures are common in fuselage construction.  Usually a large sheet of plywood with guide blocks screwed and glued to specific locations to clamp the tube to and holes cut in the sheet at clusters and other intersections to prevent fires when tacking and to allow access to the opposite side of the tube.  Another trick is to slide a piece of sheet metal under the joint to be tacked to prevent out right fire as it keeps the wood from getting enough oxygen to ignite.  The wood may char a bit but it will not break out into flames. For sheet metal work, wooden "bucks" are common.  A 3D framework that allows the fabricator to clamp the metal down and provides the shape to be replicated.  and pieces to be welded and metal finished prior to installation.  The bucks can be quite elaborate and may take longer to develop than the metal part.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
