Hi everyone, I introduced myself in the newbie section.  I recently bought a little hobart 135 with shielding gas, and when I set the regulator and do a spot weld, The next weld I do blows a bunch of gas then it goes back to normal.  I'm thinking the regulator diaphram is bad.  So, my question is do I need to buy all new gauges or can I just buy a diaphram kit for the regulator?  thanks for the help
Reply:The pressure gauge you get with your mig is not the ideal thing to control gas flow.  The gauge may be marked as flow units (cfh) but the gauge only actually responds to pressure. If you are having trouble with your regulator, replace it with a similar unit called a flowmeter.  These are similar to the pressure gauge but instead of having two gauges, one of them will be a transparent tube with a ball indicator in it.  These actually display the actual flow you are getting by how high the ball rises in the tube when the gas solenoid is activated.  These are available at your local welding store for a little over a $100 and are the proper regulator to use for mig and tig."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25

Reply:Do the needles look right? It could be that the lines just have secondary pressure built up and is surging out when the solenoid opens.  Keep the hose from the regulator to the back of the machine to a minimum helps. And the hose diameter as small as possible to lessen the volumn.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Sounds like the pressure is up too high.If you have a flow meter type regulator you can still adjust the pressure.I keep my pressure on my flow regs turned down to 30psi.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:30 PSI?That's enough to support the weight of a car!The flux gas for MIG and TIG should gently cover the weld zone. We're in the same pressures as propane stoves 10-20 inches of water column (around .5 to .75PSI).Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:Well, color me cornfuzedIf the pressure is that high, then the flow is very limited by the 1/16 (or is it smaller?) hole in the last fitting on the regulator.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:I bought a flowmeter off of eBay. I'll see how that works.
