Well I been browsing here for a bit and thought I would post a few pictures. Keep in mindwe are better at repairing diesel engines than welding, criticism is perfectly acceptable... Sorry about the quality, my phone is not all that great.
Reply:looks good keep the pics comming. what is it for ??
Reply:It is for installing up to 42" pipe under roads with out digging them up. It has a long way to go.We should be mounting the engine and trans this week, the thinking is worse than the work!
Reply:ok now i see. great work

Reply:It is a 42" Machine, it will require a 594 Pipelayer to handle it and two more 583 Pipelayersto handle the section of pipe it is on. This is our second custom built machine of this size.Last years model bored 62 roads without a breakdown. Here are the specs on the "handling" machine;Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........

Reply:Ken,  It is okay, I have been around the "boring" business all my life, I am used to it! We had too many trucks today for me to get much done, we took it out last night and flipped it then brought it back in to weld outthe bottom.Last edited by Pipeline Mechanic; 03-01-2010 at 07:41 PM.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:I don't understand how it works.  Please explain.  Do you spin the pipe into the ground then flush it out afterwards or what?My name's not Jim....
Reply:This machine will be used to install a casing pipe or dummy pipe. There will be auger loaded into the pipewith a cutting head on the end, as the material (dirt/rock) is removed the machine is advanced ahead, themachine, pipe, and auger all move ahead together. If it is casing pipe the auger is removed and a smallerpipe is then inserted inside it. When dummy pipe is used it is the same size as the pipe to be installed, usually the "new" pipe is welded to the dummy pipe and then the dummy pipe is pulled out from the opposite side, pulling the new pipe in place. It is no longer allowed to turn auger inside new pipe due to the internal damage from the friction.  It sounds complicated, but on a job 2 years ago we installed pipe under 4 roads in a day, in 120' sections of 42" OD X .741 wall thickness.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:This is gonna be F'N cool!!!Keep the pics coming.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:zapster,Thanks, will do!4on12, Thanks, I am bad out of practice with my welding. It is structurally sound, but I would like for it to be more "aesthetically pleasing"..... :lol:I didn't want to drag it out in the snow/rain today, so the underside is now temporarily welded out, atleast until more of the drive train is added. There is still a LOT of welding design fabrication left to do.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:I work on these boring projects all the time. It's labor intensive. The bore pit is usually around 20ft deep to get under the RR tracks and other utilities. The last one I was working on was a 60inch pipe. It takes a trackhoe on topside to bucket out all the spoils. If the bucket operator doesn't keep up, the guys in the pit are standing in a lot of spoil behind the borehead. Huge shore boxes are constructed inplace for safety. Usually the hydraulic pump is gigantic and is situated topside so that the exhaust and the noise is not down in the pit with the guys who can't escape the heat. Each 10ft section of 60inch pipe is welded full pen to the section that was pushed infront of it. Usually two welders go at it at the same time. I have pictures on my PC here somewhere. I will see if I can find them and post em up of what these machines do. But basically, imagine laying down a 20ft section of RR tracks, the boremachine sets on those tracks, it pushes off against the back wall, boring through the front wall. When it pushed in the pipe and excavates the spoils at the same time, and all 10ft go in, the boremachine pulls all the way back to the back wall, the trackhoe operater drops down another section of pipe, the welders weld it and the process starts all over again until the total length of bore is done. The last one I was on was over 300ft long, in 10ft sections at a time. That welder was hoppin! Of course, I have seen some jobs where only 6ft were done in a day....so slow going....Thanks for the post up of the custom build! Reply:Town had a contrator bore under the state highway to run the water service to our place. They had a small machine that ran off the aux. hydraulics on a rubber track cat excavator. Took longer to find the buried phone lines than to do the actual bore. They ran a 2" head through and then back bored with a 6 pretty neat setup they had. The boring rig, water tank, drill stem, excavator, welder and all would have fit on one truck and trailer, but the four man crew came in three trucks.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe

Reply:I got a little further along today, so here are a few more pics. The weld picture I took was how I deal with not having a rheostat, I was running 5/32 LHand it kept wanting to miss the top edge of the false bevel I was trying to fill. So insteadof going outside to turn it up, I just grabbed some 1/8 LH and skated it across at 140A.(Lazy huh?) The three beads you see are on top of three you cant see. No porosity either.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........

Reply:The directional boring machines I have seen are different than the ones on tracks. The ones on tracks that are used in my area are called Jack and Bores. Anyways, I have never seen this method you are showing and it really has me interested. Reply:Joker, It is not a method anyone can afford but a mainline Pipeline contractor, it requires about $3millionin equipment to support it. But it is FAST, I bored a two lane road in IL with a 100' section of 42"in less than an hour. Pipe installed and gone to the next one. If you have never seen it before it is amazing. Still is to me anyway after a lifetime of involvement.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:Here is some of todays progress, we mounted the engine and welded on some "jack pegs" out of 3.5" square tubing to lift from. I will getpictures of that tomorrow. We have two forklifts and I named them today, Fat Man and Little Boy. We out grew the 6K lb rated "Little Boy"and had to start using the 22.5K rated "Fat Man". The jack pegs were so I could pick it up low and get it in the shop before tomorrows rain.Anyway here are some work in progress pics of my custom motor mounts;Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:Crikey, a detroit hooked to a bulldog tri-shaft.  Oughta have enough tranny to handle that little jimmy screamer.  Interesting build-up, other than differing with your opinion of the drivetrain, I would love to see it work.  (my opinion of drivetrain woulda been cummins and a twin shaft spicer, like a 1010 maybe...)cheers,cccablecat, I actually agree with you, but the guy who wants it specifically asked for a 4-71 Detroit and it is a little hotter than a stock 6BT Cummins. I had to go with the Bulldog Trans because I needed to reverse thepower output to make the planetary turn the proper direction. If I do another one it will be Cummins Powered and Hydrostatic driven and be much easier to build. No welding today, just a lot of parts chasin' & swappin.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........

Reply:So the drill bit is inside of the leading piece of pipe, which is just a sacrificall piece? The pipe is all weld to whatever length is required before the hole is drilled? The side booms move in the drilling direction to apply pressure on the cutting edge of the bit? Just trying to understand the operation.Nice fabrication work.

Reply:Yes that makes sense, didnt see the winch in the pics. Couldnt see how the side booms could apply forward pressure on the drill. Thank You
Reply:Those are the OLD school boring machines we used to have to weld up the pipe and water injection pipes at he begining and end of each job . I didnt think those things even existed anymore . Great job on it
Reply:there is two companys around boise that run them, they must handle the river gravels and boulders better and cheaper than directional mud bores do, all the big stuff is done with auger and casing around here, They were advancing the casing with an air driven casing hammer that rode on the track on the few jobs I have seen. Feel sorry for the poor sucker down in the hole with that Detroit though.Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
