If you were new to welding and were looking to stat a new career how would you go about it. What school; would you go to. What classes would you take and what would you do differently than you did?Also, if you were over 52 years old would you begin a career in welding?Thank you.T.Last edited by tilden; 10-18-2013 at 11:29 PM.

Reply:It all depends on you. If you've got another 10 years of hard work in you, then go for it. You will need at least 2 years of experience before you end up in the sort of job you want. Be advised that a lot of industrial welding requires you be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift over 50lbs, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, work in heights, etc. I'm not trying to offend you, I just want you to get a clear picture to help your decision. It is a very active field.At the same time there are other types of welding you can get into, which will help you make a decision on which sort of school to attend. What exactly are you wanting to do?
Reply:Well if I were in your situation, I would target maintainance and repair. Many hospitals, schools, manufacturing plants are falling apart. My girl weldor's husband is a plumber working for the UCLA, and they are training them to weld because they can't find maintainance technicians to weld support structures or beams, or holding tanks, whatever. Oh, and they are being trained in Tig and mig. The mig side is solid and fluxcore. Upon completion of a simple course they are given a permit to weld on site in liew of having to bring in outside contractors. My girl weldor is hitting 40. As much as she would like to be a pipe weldor, her real talent is aerospace tig. That and the fact that she is 6 months preggo. She does some stick arc for me when a customer wants an LA certified card, but those jobs are far and few between, and kind of a loss leader for me. P.S.
