Anyone here build one? Theres a big thread about them on pirate 4x4.... Im getting pretty close on mine..Gonna order a die this week..These are the plans. http://www.gottrikes.com/Tube_Bender.htm (im  not affiliated with this company)..So far its been about 150$ for the steel ,some was free scrap, and 75$ for the ram.. Reply:and what about the labor?
Reply:The whole point of building a gottrikes bender is you build it yourself
Reply:i would guess around 30 hrs maybe more depending on machinery and tooling used also if its the weekend and beer is involved..there are a few parts missing in the picture, the ram doesn't look to be the correct part, the ram in the plans i have uses a bottom mounting bracket on the cylinder...tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:I've been wanting to build one, but I'm not sure it's any cheaper than just buying one.
Reply:Are you welding that thing in your basement next to the gas water heater?!?!Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:Ive been welding on it outside, but I  lug it down the basement when I'm done so nobody steals it for scrap in the middle of the night.  And yes I picked up the wrong ram , it has no brackets or bolt holes or anything on the bottom, I should have wrote the part number down ..But my local hf is usually cool about exchanges so im not worried.. It is a fair amount of work , it took like 2 or 3 hours just to cut all the tubing up on my bandsaw..The worst part was drilling  those holes on my drill press, and trying to get them to perfectly line up..
Reply:I built one a few years ago. I love it. Great supportDave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Do yourself a favor and loose the air over hydraulic set up. You will be waiting and waiting for your tubes to bend. Here is my JD squared to full hydraulic conversion. I have about 15 hours into it.[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxGVHTMgMzU"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxGVHTMgMzU[/ame]www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt. Reply:Hey AK Keep on trucking you will be happy when it’s done. It’s nice to have a business so you can write off the cost of tools.  But for us DIY guys gottrikes is the way to go.  I built the first one years ago (my pictured at the top). There are more gottrikes benders out there then JD and all are pleased with what they have.  Do swap out the ram for the air/hydraulic and get the other bottom and you won't look back.  I made a roller for the bottom guide just a personal touch.Wheel are a must I roll mine like a wheel barrow.have funTom Attached Images

Reply:Bought the Plans off Frank a few years ago. Taking the dimensions I built a ProTools clone. So it could be striped down for storage. Picture shows a 12v Hydraulic unit, I now have a 240v pump. Attached Images

Reply:I did not get a chance to go through this entire thread, but I will say one thing that I sincerely hope you did. I really hope you took your time and laid evrythingout with regards to your holes both before and especially, after you welded! If you didn't do ths, you will never be able to accurately bend tubing. Your die will be twisted and on a multi plane bend, your angle finder will not be true. I cannot emphasize how important this is.I had built my JD2 electric/hydraulic conversion 10 yrs ago and ended up redoing the wntire thing a little over a year ago. I ended up machining everything that the original JD2 frame mounted to. Hole alignment is crucial. It may seem like you are saving yourself some money builing this by yourself but one screw up and the entire thing is useless. Sure it will bend tube, but not with any degree of accuracy.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:One thing I foud is to keep your angles inline I use one of those amgle levels.I clamp on a scrape and mount the level on the back end of the tubing.this way you see if your rotating the tube or move it the angle you want for an offset angle. Here is 1-5/8" tube with 4 bends all inline to each other and it lays flat on the concrete floor. Reply:Using an angle finder is a moot point if there is slop in your holes and the tube causes the die to shift AT ALL. This will yield you and erroneous angle. For single plane bends without having to rotate the tube, you can get by with care, but multi plane bends will be screwed up everytime.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:I offered a helpful hint not a correction for bad building practices.Poop in will give you poop out  Learn to do it right or how to fix it latter, quicker to do it right the first time.

Reply:When I say I machined my frame, I will ttry to show by some pics I took. Notice there are vertical pieces machined to fit perfectly and there are 3 capscrews securing it top and bottom. I took some pics from various angles to try and show how/why it was needed. Also, you will notice the large flat plate supporting the hydraulic cylinder. This keeps the die/frame/bender combo from flexing when the ram is fully extended. I hope the pics help show my point. Reply:Originally Posted by TJSHey Jack,My JD 2 arms were flexing and twisting where the main two large bolts bolt to my conversion plate. So I made a brace and welded it making sure everything was perfectly inline before welding. I had a hard time getting the main pin out of the die. It is a little better but I am going to make a plate set up like you have to support the ram because this also wants to twist down the main die pin making it hard to change dies. Mine works find and repeatability is key for me.T.J.

Reply:Originally Posted by ak4130I tried hard but those holes on the 2 uprights really arent  the greatest  theres no slop in the pins, but when I insert  the pin for the follower it isnt perfectly level  I figured I can try to get the brackets that hold the pin for the round die as square as possible in relation to the crappy follower die holes in the 2 uprights.. My die set is supposed to arrive late next week, figured I will wait until I have it before I put those brackets on Worst comes to worst I will just cut those uprights out and redo I actually have a few extra feet of the tubing because I knew these holes were gonna be trouble.
Reply:I think we all have had problems with our projects.  I appreciate it when some one will tell you how they screwed up in a way to help others do better.  Showing that we all need a reference from those who go before us as they speak with authority.Have funTom
Reply:I wasn't offended in the least bit..I appreciate the insight from everybody.. When I drilled the holes I drilled a pilot hole the size of the web of the 7/8" drill then went straight to the 7/8"..I don't know what happened but the holes were all over the place..I left the bolts on the vise loose thinking it will help the 7/8 drill center itself on the pilot hole, maybe that is what happened Still waiting on my die to show up, will post how everything works out next week..
Reply:Sorry to bring up an old thread...How does that follow roller work? Seems like a neat/simple thing that I'd like to make for mine.
