Hello folks i need a rating from some arc experts...The machine...Dayton 230 amp welder...amps, about 180..3/16 thick steel...6011 1/8 inch rod...just the center pass, disregard the other welds, just trying to get a feel for the machine...Thanks
Reply:1/8 6011 @ 180!!! That's exactly TWICE what it should be run at! 80 to 90 amps, depending on the machine.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:way to much heat what are you tring to do just practice or what? try 1/2 the amperage and slow down a little, bead looks too wide were you draging the electrode or holding the arc a little to long try stringer beads, one in the center and one along both sides. hope this helps and good [email protected]
Reply:First off, stop calling it arc welding. Any electric welding is arc welding, and there are like 50 different processes...Its stick welding...And, turn it wayyyy down... But, we've seen lots worse on here. Just keep posting pics, and happy welding [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I grew up calling it arc welding, Im not sure how that name came about for it. Probably started when welding with electricity came about. From what I can remember being in welding school 6011 took some practice to get used to. Seems like you always wanted to run it at higher amperage to keep a good arc going.
Reply:I run that rod anywhere from 70 - 120 amps on a Lincoln AC225 pretty regular. Rods always come in a package with the amperage range printed on the package, check that out beforehand. That, and you should be whipping and pausing with it. It will run a bead by dragging, but try both techniques to experience it for yourself. That's a heck of a bead!!   I almost hacked up a furball looking at it.  City of L.A. Reply:Looks like it would hold fine. A rating from 1-10 10 being best I would give it a 5ish.
