Sheet Metal Brake Here is my latest project- a 44” sheet metal brake. It was a pretty easy build. The key is to have the hinge bolt centered between the base and the bending plate. I morphed the design from Major League Duning, a Harbor Freight floor model, plus a few of my own thoughts. http://www.majorleagueduning.com/tech/Brake/Brake.htmThe bending plate is 5/8 thick 4” wide- over kill for sure but @ .45/lb I decided to pick it up. Plus it’s not my money!!!The clamp bar is flat stock with angle iron tacked to it. I left a little of the flat stock exposed to get sharp bends. Additionally the clamp bar is set back about 1/8 to give the material room to bend. I did some test bends without the A - frame on the clamp bar, it flexed slightly, once the A – frame was added there is no noticeable flex. Pictured is 24” piece of 16 gauge aluminum (I bent it past 90 by mistake) Attached ImagesDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Nice!  I am planning to build one here soon.  Probably wont go that wide, but you never know!
Reply:Go big!!!I too did not plan to go this large but all the "drops" where I get my steel were the same lenght. I took it as a sign.It looks better in person the flash makes it look kind of crappy and dirty.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:JustmeIf you look at the first picture you can see a piece of tubing welded to the middle of bending plate. I used 1.5" tubing so I can slide a 4' long piece of 1.25 tube bar into it for leverage. The widest piece of sheet metal I have bent is 30". With the leverage bar it was no problem.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
