Hey all,Newbie to this great site, and welding in general.Great site - Thanks ! I'm in the automotive field , so finally got into welding (3 semesters at occupational center ) after 20 yrs , hope to integrate into trade.Anyway , I was given a shock/spring assembly from a dirt bike ,cracked at one of the mount eyes(garbage).I decided to try , repair , as this is more "real life" than coupons in school.I'm using a Synchrowave 250.This aluminum is about 1/4 " thick . Initially set machine to a/c,200a,#6 on the balance, using 75/25% argon, helium.Beveled the edges ,and opened the crack to about 1/8 ".To my surprise this aluminum started pooling like butter, had ta back off the pedal ! Reset machine to 125a,continued , filler-er4043 , was taken nicely, had to pump pedal , everything flowed great ! Just blew me away at how different this was, compared to the 6061 t6 I'd been playing with. The motorcycle aluminum, melted like butter in comparison ????? Figured , being a motorcycle part it woulda been more like the 6061 , or tougher ? Any way ,was able to grind, file shape ,drill , everything looked good, solid like 1 piece ! What gives ? I plan on getting into repairing aluminum brackets , manifolds etc. for autos , so just trying to get feet wet, research.Any input would be appreciated. My buddy (old owner) seen it , he wants it back ! I told him looks ok , but I justt can't guarantee integrity .Stupid question , without being able to show you , but should something like this hold up ? every angle I drilled , grinded down , showed solid aluminum , no porosity , or any other flawed indication ????? Thanks in advance for any input ! Tony
Reply:some frames are heat treated after build you would need to ask -maker of frame it may hold  or may not only time will tell a shock mount would be a tuff test for your weldidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:Hey Prop DR ! Thanks for reply ! Man ! I may be buggin you in the future !  With a title like that , I'm sure you have a wealth of knowledge ! I have had to PAY a few times for skeg repair on my Bassboat , ANOTHER reason I've gotten into welding ! California Delta can be brutal ! Yeah , this is not part tof the frame, actually the shock/spring assembly . The eye , where the mount bolt goes thru.H wants to run it , he explains even if it failed again , theres a safety factor built in shock is mounted in some sort of pocket ??? No where for it to go ??
