.063 6061 aluminum. After the sides were done I tried sanding the welds flat with a belt sander.  Then hit the sandblaster and noticed it cracked so I welded over all the ends again.I had problems doing bungs last time, but this time I kept moving the torch from the bung to the base metal and it seemed to work much better. I did have one mess up as you can see on the right bung and couldn't figure out how to fix it. I also worked on trying to tie in a bead I laid then stopped and started again. I forgot what video it was but Jody from weldingtipsandtricks.com showed a good way to do it. Thoughts? Good or bad, whatever helps me get better. I feel I'm getting better every time I hit the pedal. Just running out of ideas on crap to make.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Where do you purchase the fittings with the threads?
Reply:Well--you're trying. Seal tight welding is tricky.Did you do a very low--like 2# pressure test (with a tape for blowoff) to check for leaks?Every crater on those beads can be a leak in addition to a crack initiator.Fade out when stopping, add a dab of filler, a dab of heat to fuse if needed. This crater biz has been discussed many times.Blackbird
Reply:I see a few areas that look like you might be getting there, some where you look too cold and some where you are too hot. You definitely need to work on consistency and heat control still.I'm also guessing you need to work on your fit and fab skills. On the one open end pict, the one plate is higher than the other at the corner, and the one side doesn't look all that straight.  Also looks like you just jammed the two together. Take a look at David R's box thread to see how to do the fit up on an outside corner weld. Note only the inside edges touch and it leaves you a V to fill with weld material. Good fit up will make a huge difference in how your project turns out. You'll find most of the really good welders like ZT and  Zap spend a lot of time making sure fit up is very good. You will find may of the guys here who do extraordinary work will spend more time on fit up and prep, then they do the actual welding. A good welder can make up for a less than perfect joint in some cases, but it just makes it 10 times harder if you are learning. I see it all the time at the tech school. The kids are in too much of a rush to get to welding that they don't prep their work well enough. They wonder why they can't get the same results they can when I prep a piece and show them how to do a weld. They do a semi-decent weld, then rush back over and don't take the time to prep the pieces again and everything falls apart.Cut and fit your pieces as if there's no room for error and every fit up needs to be almost water tight before welding ( assuming it's not an open root.. there your gap has to be just as exact as if the pieces were touching.). A nice tight joint that's properly laid out for welding will greatly improve your final results.Last edited by DSW; 04-04-2012 at 07:20 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:HiIf you want good cuts on thin aluminum try a 10" table saw with a 80 tooth carbide blade.I cut some 1/4" and thinner that way just move slowly. . The table saw makes it very easy to duplicate part sizes and straight cuts for projects like yours. Pictures show 1/4" plate parts cut for my plasma table.have funTom Attached ImagesLast edited by acourtjester; 04-04-2012 at 10:23 AM.Reason: additional info
Reply:Did you put anything inside it??
Reply:Where did you get the drain fitting from?I might try this out of stainless or thicker diamond plate aluminum when I'm feeling ballsy. I need a catch can anyways (or just to set up the venturi utilizing exhaust flow)Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.

Reply:Like Doug said...spend more time on your fit-up.I see so many people that skip right over the fit-up process in a rush to get to the welding then wonder why their welds don't look good.Good fit-up also makes welding more enjoyable, especially when you're learning. It can be so frustrating when your able to make a nice weld for a few inches then all of a sudden it turns to crap because the gap changed. Most people don't realize why their welding is so inconsistent and you get what we see here...varying heat input and weld size in an attempt to make up for poor fit. Here are some pics of fit-up and welding I've done on .050" aluminum.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:A co-worker of mine made these two, Maybe the Images can help you in some way. If you want I can try to get some Tips from him for you. (do let me know)
Reply:ZTfab - So when you make a tach like that and you start welding, do you just keep welding over the tach or do you do anything different when you approach it? Mclark - Did he cut the top/bottom the same size as the tube or slightly bigger or smaller? Any pics of his inside baffle? Both look really good guys!Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:The Top and bottom are the same size, I don't have pics of the Inside since there currently installed on the Vehicle.

Reply:2psi. Oh, whatever works. I have to find a few fittings. Reply:Nismo82, long time no see! hah. What's the vehicle of choice now? I'm on a mazdaspeed3 with an upgraded turbo (cobb AccessPort is effing AMAZING....THANK YOU COBB). Problem with where I need the catch can, it doesnt' need a breather since I'm going between the block and IM.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:After the spec v, had a mazdaspeed protege, then a 2g dsm that I built to make 452awhp. Then sold it and had a few bikes, now I have a 88 chrylser conquest. About to just give up on it because I don't have time though. And I enjoy welding and riding the motorcycle so not much time for the car.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Nice! Did the bike thing for a while, but now I have a daughter, so the wife hinted *strongly* at my getting rid of it...........and so it's gone.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:My gf keeps trying me to sell the bike, but it's not going to happen. My daughter loves sitting on it and so does her son. Mine and my daughters My gf's sonsI gotta find a pink one of these. Reply:lol! NiceI had 'zuk as well. 06 gixxer 1k. LOVED that bike. Could putz around in any gear and get 45mpg, but I also touched 165+ in it (on a closed course). Had some other bikes which were fun, but aside from the gixxer, the one I miss the most is the 06 Harley Vrod Night Rod. Black n chrome....and a motor developed by porsche.......that's all you need!Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:How do some of you guys get such nice fillet welds on aluminum? Mine always come out huge and like I dumped a ton of filler on it, I can never get my puddles to run smoothly, it's like my arc is wandering even if I use a new electrode. Using a transformer unit, not sure if that makes a difference?I have been practicing a lot.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
