i understand that 6013 are for thinner metal. what is the thinnest that one can weld with such rod. maybe use a 110 welder ?? i have a hf 110 welder and a Century 220volt welder. i wanna build a tool box for both fenders on my Ford 1510 and Ford 9N and probably the Allis Chalmers D17. never done this before so any suggestions will be appreciated.
Reply:depends on how much you practice.  16g is doable.  really it comes down to how much hood time you get practicing.  MIG will be faster and easier for what u want to do.  However you will have a good sense of accomplishment doing it with stick... you will want the  1/16 rods that they sell and make sure u can set your machine low at 20 or so amps.    this is where machine quality comes into play. how nice does your machine weld at low current.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:idk never welded thin stuff.the hf welderdoes good i suppose. the century will burn thru it.
Reply:1/16 is the thinnes ive welder with a stick.(7018 on a muffler 1/16 rod at about 55 amps for short 1-2inch welds at a time)as for how thin you can go i have no idea. 1/16=.062  16gage=.0598
Reply:16SWG is easily do-able with an E6013 (although, a good fit up helps), I personally use a 2.5mm (3/32") rod at lowish amps, works fine, just need to drag the rod and go quickly, if you try and hold any arc length what so ever it'll just burn through.  I've even welded 16swg galvanised sheet with them, although it's much harder as you need to run higher amps to burn through the surface coating. Also, it is a common misconception that E6013 is only for sheet metal, you can weld up to 3/4" mild steel quite happily with them (provided you know what you're doing).
