I know I am probably overlooking something ridiculously simple.  What have some of you done to pipe exhaust off your welder to get it outside the shop?
Reply:Park it outside. If the leads are short, make up extensions for them. If it has to be inside, get enough flex pipe to take it out a window or under the garage door.                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Leave it bolted to the truck outside, run the cables under the door.
Reply:I've gone "green". I have this new gadget called an electric welder for shop work that produces no emissions... Sorry I couldn't resist..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I suppose I should clarify.  I want to work on the welder, indoors, with it running.  Flex dryer hose?

Reply:Aluminum flex pipe used for venting clothes dryers is not "heavy duty" enough to be used right up against the welder exhaust stack, but if you go to an auto parts store and purchase about 4 to 6 feet of steel exhaust flex pipe of the appropriate diameter to come off the welder stack and then you could use dryer flex pipe for the rest of the run, you might be OK.but unless you affect some really tight and sound sealing to where any of the piping meets, you can still put some CO into your shop. The biggest danger in CO poisoning is due to the fact that CO is absorbed nearly 100 times more readily than Oxygen into the body.  That means that you can have only a very slight volume of CO in the shop air but the body will absorb the CO in preference of Oxygen if CO is available.  The industrial limit for CO in the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine is 0.5 % CO.  That is one half of 1 percent.  Not much at all. So even if you are piping the bulk of the exhaust outside, even a little bit staying inside can still kill you or at least make you sick. Careful, careful!

Reply:Auto shops I've worked at use the rubber flexible tubing, but there is a fan inline creating a vacuum on the system.  Without this, it's hard to make exhaust go where you want it, expecially if you don't have tight-sealing connections.+1 on CO being sneaky -- Suggest a CO alarm for your shop.  Had one in mine for awhile -- a very eye-opening experience.  Darn thing was going off all the time if I started an engine and ran it for a few seconds.A place I used to work for had a Bobcat mounted inside a Ford E350 van with the exhaust flex-piped into the van's exhaust system.  We put a CO monitor in the van body and it started alarming almost immediately after you started the welder.  Even with all doors in the van open, the alarm would constantly go off whenever the welder was running.
Reply:Thanks for the ideas everyone.
Reply:Might try shop vac hose and pass through a running shop vac for suction. Leave the vac outside. Dan D.
Reply:Shop vac???  No No No!Shop vacs electric motor shares some of the air that is drawn through the filter. Therefore any COMBUSTIBLE fumes that are drawn in through the vac hose have the potential to be ignited when they pass through the motor section (brushes & commutator make lotsa sparks).Evacuation blower units that are tailor made for exhaust gas removal have a completely separated motor cooling provision from the exhaust gas removal fan.
Reply:To add......  Most auto shops always have the bay doors open, at least partially while working on a running engine.  No matter what, it just the absolute safe way to operate.  A few simple fans in the shop, pointing toward the open bay/garage door(s) helps push the CO out.  An open bay door and flexible exhaust pipe slid directly on to the tail pipe of any combustion engine is your safe bet.  Don't forget to wear hearing protection too.   Motors are loud when working right next to them. Reply:If you're cranking a car that isn't firing, you can be putting extremely flammable fumes down the exhaust system.
Reply:I put common welder panel connectors on the wall of my ISO container and hung short pigtails with QDs on the inside. I went from "indoors to outdoors" but you could go the other way. Sealed with 3M 5200 Marine sealant, the goo of the gods which is far superior to mere silicone sealant. If I had an engine drive outdoors I'd just run a remote indoors. A downward-facing PCV elbow large enough to pass through the connector would get around needing any special cables.
Reply:Put it outside unless it will be a permanent exhaust to the outside, any half done job will eventually get you in trouble! Maybe not right away, but down the road you'll get sloppy, then it will get you! Before I blacked out, I stumbled out the man door.Felt like a BAD BAD Hangover that lasted 2 weeks! Can't stand the smell hardly at all any more!If I had been any older, I probably would have been dead!
