miller maxstar 200 tig needs repaired. Cost ?

I am looking at a miller maxstar that some one wants to sell me but I need to confirm a few things. What is the most likely items on these units to fail?The miller when powered on, you can hear what sounds like 60hz hum inside the machine, but the LED does not light up. I was perhaps thinking PS failure? Also, what are the chances 1 of the four boards to have failed? There is I think 3 daughter cards and one motherboard plus one separate card. It does not come with tig wand/cord or foot control. Lastly, miller is asking for the serial number. I have it but why would they want to know?
Reply:They want the serial # so they can give you correct information regarding your machine. They do make changes from time to time. Why would that question bother you ? They may also look in there data base to see if that machine has been reported stolen.

Reply:Pre-inverter?  That would be a transformer machine.  Basically anything bigger than a bread box or too heavy to carry by yourself.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Hi there,I am having the same problem. No light in the front of the welder but I do hear a humming coming from it. I paid $850. for the welder plus tig accessories.Doesn't work. Problem is, I am in Bermuda 800 miles from N.C. USA.No help or support here.If any one is familiar with what might be my problem please help. I am now going to change theplug from 120V to 250V and see if it will work on that hook up.
Reply:Have any friends that repair electronics. TVs, radios, control systems?odds are either the input module and maybe the mother pcb have failed or the boost control pcb, or all three. when working right, there is 800vdc inside these machines.Contact with 300vdc can be fatal. about all you can do it make sure line voltage is getting inside the case. You may have to call miller electric and ask where a service shop close to you is. I can see this costing between 500 and 1500 dollars US as a guess. See you owners manual for Millers phone number.The serial number is the best way for us to know what model maxstar 200 you have. there are 3 or 4 different models.
