Why is it that I have been tig welding aluminum for maybe 45minutes under my belt and I can get a nice stack of dimes like ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) )however tonight when I tried on mild steel (which I have done for hour) it's all flat as flat can be and looks like >>>>>>>I am welding with the same technique. I'll to get pics before I leave for work in the morning.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Aluminum usually freezes faster cuz its a big heatsink, steel solidifies slower and its often harder to get distinct dimes.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:You'll have to excuse me but I just have to ask this...If you have only been TIG welding Aluminum for 45 minutes, and Steel for an hour WHY are you concentrating on the visual appearance of the weld deposit instead of the Strength and Integrity of the WELD Itself? If you concentrate on making a Good, Sound Weld FIRST the rest will come.A "Pretty" weld doesn't guarantee that it is a GOOD Weld.Later,Jason
Reply:Steel for hours. I just got my new machine which can do aluminum and my last one couldn't.How can I be sure of the strength of the weld when I'm welding on a rounded pipe or large piece of flat stock?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:getting  some "dimes" on some scrap aluminium don't make you a weldersteel "flows" different from alu, the puddle has a different viscosity it is useless to try and make a weld on steel look like one on alu.don't get me the wrong way, but a trained monkey can do that (and I see many at work  )--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous

Reply:Because you are improving at such a pace that you are starting to get the feel for alum and realizing that in the end mild steel is a tedious PIA.Personally I feel alum is easier.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:When I can get a puddle on aluminum it welds so nice. When I can't I hate it. I will agree personally I think it's easier and helps because it doesn't change color.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:I try not to make my goal giant concave fillets, but to each his own. What it "should" look like is equal length legs, full throat length and good wet out edges.  Consistency is a plus, but that's more than appearance factor.  Stack of dimes are a personal preference, but it takes a lot more skill to walk the cup on a 6G than to rest an arm on a positioner. Just saying. Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Red tungsten, 3/32, 20schf (straight argon), 70amps, gas lens #8 cup.1/16th rod used on both.Mild steel (.0068 thick). Hit it with a flap wheel before welding.Stainless steel (no flap wheel or cleaning)^^The very bottom one I was pulsing the peddle every time I dipped the rod.I don't have a pulse setting, but I tried it on aluminum too and it seems to work pretty well for me. Is that a bad habit or no?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Gamble, your steel welds show too much heat. Since the settings are close to right, my guess is you are not moving fast enough. That would also explain why your alum welds you have posted in the past look the way they do with the low amps you have posted. By waiting around taking your time with the alum, you are just heating up the material and it's acting like you are using more amps than you are on that 1/4" alum. I'd bet if you tried to do say 1/8" alum with your method the whole bottom of your welds would just drop out from the excessive heat. The Stainless one at the top is also too hot. The middle one is fair with the exception of the giant crater at the begining and the ugly color. Were you using standard filler for these or Stainless? The "pulsed" one looks cold, again with the exception of the giant crater at the start. All these welds show signs you need to work on heat control some more..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:This was on 55amps. Is this better? Same setup, red, 3/32, 1/16th rod and 22scfh. I touched the rod to the tungsten as you can see all the way on the right, but still made a bead before I cleaned it and gave up for the night. I'm now out of gas.
