my instructor is teaching me how to weld magnesium and titanium in a few months he said they make giant aluma cups that are about 4 to 5 inch in diameter never seen em he said its the only right way to get gas coverage with out building a purge box .ive never seen these were can i buy some at ?Quote Originally Posted by vwguy3 View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:Mag can be welded with normal sized cups. I've never seen 4-5" cups.. Biggest I've seen was around 1.5" and had a trailing shield behind it.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:He's got to be thinking about a trailing shield. Never seen a alumina nozzle anywhere near that size. Titanium depending on application can be welded without a trailing shield successfully. Gas coverage has a lot to do with torch angle and keeping a long post flow and not pulling torch away from work when arc goes out.
Reply:ok thank you how much should a trailing shield set me back ? need one for a wp-17 i run a gas lens alsoQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3 View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:A trailing shield is prob more than you want to spend. A large gas lens will be fine for most anything you are doing while learning, short welds (1" or less) will let you keep the weld shielded properly.
