So, now the project of your dreams is complete.  A VERITABLE WORK OF ART Get all the welding crud and rust off of it.  I like a cup brush, followed by washing it down in mineral spirits (paint thinner)Prime it.  Nice overlap on the spray pattern!  And let it dry overnite.Inspect the surface.  In this case I had a gun failure, the packing on the needle was bad (had to buy a new gun  ), and the gun was spitting paint balls Use 400 grit wet/dry paper (with water) to knock the nubbies down.  Don't sand off the primer   Be gentle, and wash and soak the paper all the time to clean it and lubricate it with water.  What's left of the nubbies won't show under a finish coat. Now for the paint.........................."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Now for the paint.  THE ICING ON THE CAKE, THE CHERRY ON TOP, THE PEEECE DEE REEEEESTANCE Start out with a fine mist coat.  Just enough to apply some material on the surface.  This gives the next coat some "tooth".  KEEP IT REAL LIGHTGo smoke a cigarette.  In other words........let it dry down a bit.....to the point of being tacky.  You want it tacky so that future coats will blend into the previous coat.I like to spray pretty thin mist coats.  There's 6 mist coats on this project.  Spray in overlaping patterns, keep it wet but not runny, and SMOKE THAT CIGARETTE BETWEEN COATS.I like Van Sickle Equipment Paint, it's good stuff, and reasonably cheap.  Use any oil type paint thinner, DON'T USE ACETONE, IT DRYS TOO FAST BETWEEN COATS.  MINERAL SPIRITS IS A "LONG" THINNER AND WORKS BEST.This is a satin black.  Why a satin black?????  I want it to blend into the night when the truck is parked outside some motel in some sleazy part of some town.  No see um, maybe no steal um "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Now to get a few cases of cigarettes and paint the truck and trailer for the same effect
Reply:To add to Sam's CLEAN THE GUN!!!!!! fill the cup half full with thinner, and store the tip in it till the next use.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Very Nice Sam! I have some painting in Choctaw I could use some help with. lol. Thanks for the tips..Travis
Reply:I HATE......HATE .......HATE   paint. In hell evrything will be metal, no wood, no plastic, all the paint will be oil based, Oh NO water based stuff down there. The primer will be crappy, in a highly corrosive enviroment, so it needs to be resanded and repainted every six weeks.Unfortunately I am good at it
Reply:I found something that makes an excellent primer for bare metal. "Flood Penetrol" sold at lowes in qt cans. It's meant to thin oil base paint w/ to prevent brush marks. I spray it on just as it comes out of the can. I've used it on a couple of projects. It takes quite awhile to dry(a couple of days), but tough as nails. Once dry then I spray the paint over it. I built a cart for my chop saw and used it for primer, let it dry and sprayed Miller blue over it. I gave the paint a couple of weeks to harden good and whacked it w/ the point of my chipping hammer hard enough to dent the metal. No paint chipped off.                                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:penetrol is an excellent product
Reply:Sorry, Samm, I wasn't trying to hijack your thread. I just wanted to share what I'd found about Penetrol. That box looks plenty strong and should last.                                                    MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Samm,I too apologise for sidetracking your thread, your paint and box looks good. Have you tried POR15? A couple of clean steps, prime, POR15, then topcoat ( not UV proof ). It is rust proof stuff, properly applied it is the best rust proof you can buy.
