What works for repairing pot metal like on an old Ford grille. I have a stick and a mig welder. Due to the low melting temp of the pot metal, these won't work. I was told may be a tig welder? this is for the grille surround on these. Always cracked broken on top.  I have used a product called " muggy weld" before on this with some success but very tedious work. Any help here. I am a novice welder at best .   Thanks, WarrenLast edited by WarrenD; 12-18-2013 at 08:46 PM.
Reply:Most likely zinc.  Besides some sort of solder, I know of no way to "weld" it.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:I repair my grill in my '65 Impala with my tig welder and aluminum filler, but it is a stamped piece and not die cast... It took a couple tries and sanding it back down redoing it due to porosity, but I eventually got it...Such beats spending $400 for a reproduction....
Reply:If it's a zinc/pot metal piece, it can definitely be fluxed and soldered.  Back the joint with something (not copper unless you want the copper to become part of the repair) to keep the joint from sagging while heating.  There is some sort of clay that can be molded around the part to create the shape you want and hold it while soldering, but I don't know what it's called or where to get it.  Here are some YouTube videos on repairing auto pot metal.http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...t%20metal&sm=3Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Thanks for the replies. I have used Muggy weld before and it does work. Just have to be creative with the jigs used for holding the work. That heat paste sounds like the product to use as well. Have used Playdough before on spot welds to help absorb heat and help from warping.    Thanks, Warren

Reply:For that type of metal you would want to TIG weld. They make special welding filler wire for that metal. You can tell it is zink when you strike an arc on it with a TIG torch. There will be a green glow in the area around the tungsten.Usually the glow around the tungsten with steel or stainless will be red or blue.I found this out when repairing zinc engine cases on weed eater tools.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
