hi guys! Well as the title states i am a tig welding noob. I've been on here a few times just but just as a lurker looking for some helpful info, and now i realize i totally should have registered awhile ago.. but anyway a brief history on my welding skills or lack there of lol. i took welding 1&2 in my senior year of high school, touched on the basics of oxy/acetylene, stick and mig as well as the usual how use simple fabrication tools. fast forward to now, i have not really done a lot welding in the last few years but i still know my way around a welding machine and i have cobbled together some exhausts and random pieces. i have a portable 110v mig that i have been using for real light stuff. but i'm getting into more technical pieces that are better made with a tig welder. so recently i acquired a miller diversion 180 and a few accessories and i'm learning how to use it. . and i'm looking for a little coaching and advice from all of you know-it-all's SO........... my current project is a set of turbo manifolds for my car. material: 304 stainless butt weld fitting 1.5 inch schedule 30 pipe.(now i have not actually burned the 304 yet as i am practicing on some 316L pieces that are similar in dimensions.) i'm using my diversion 180, settings are 90A, 20 cfh 3/32 gray tungsten (that's what my welding store sold me) ground to a sharp point and 3/32 316L filler rod. i feel like i may have to concept of how to tig but i'm totally a noob so all suggestions are welcome here are some pictures. BEADS ON TUBE (2 without filler)there is this very fine film forming on top of the weld once it starts cooling that isn't normal is it?(4th weld up)another shotlet me know what you think!thanks, marc

Reply:Your running too hot and not pushing enoughFiller, I don't like 316L for 304.....if you migWeld your manifold use 308 SL it wets outbetter and is easier to run.....If your TIG Welding Use 308 L and a gas lens with 1/16 tungsten Ceriated works goodLast edited by B_C; 08-26-2011 at 12:42 AM.
