Why volcano with mig welding

030 wire, setting 6/6 or 7/7welding mild steel rod & square iron.as weld cools it pushes out some material like Mt. St. Helens blowing out ash plume.any suggestions?ThanksJames

Reply:Thanks for responding.I have a 250amp CK mig, it was set at 6 volts, 6 wire speed & 7 volts, 7 wire speed with 030 wire same results.argon/ox tank, 4-5 flow, mild steel 1/4 inch rod & open ended box iron.can't send photos to this site since I don't have them on website.if you provide email address I could send them that wayJames

Reply:Spray welding makes less porosity but in turn makes more volcano's. It is mainly due to contaminated base metal. Rust, baked in grease/oils, paint is great for this.
Reply:Thanks Gentlemen.I believe the "rusty, dirty, oily" is the cause, even though I ground the heck out of the surface.J>
