I do a 6010 1/8"root uphill and a 7018 3/32" up hill and im done.does anyone get a third pass in there?G
Reply:Ya if I'm milking it lol
Reply:That dont sound right. It should be a minimum 3 passes (root, grind then hot, then fill/cap for 40). Sounds like you are missing a key part the hot pass to burn out any imperfections in the root. If you are laying too much metal on passes you need to step down a size on rod (ie 3/32 5p, and the same for 7018)... Just my rookie opinion.
Reply:I do it in three. Its not good practice to cap when you havent gone flush with the previous pass.UA Local 598
Reply:Everything that I do 3 inch and up is done with 3 passes. Root / grind - fill / cover. And by the way, lets see it!
Reply:I just use duck tape for 3" and below, it is just faster and if you paint it the same color as the pipe no one will ever know.
Reply:ok question here isnt 6010 a down hill rod so why not run the 6010 down and the 7018 up ?

Reply:6010 *can* be ran downhill, but then again I guess you could say the same about most rods. Reasons for running downhill vs. uphill fall less on the type of rod and more so on the WPS, expected service of the piece and the type of material you are welding on. One of the biggest reasons you run downhill on gas line pipe is because you can travel faster, leaving you with a smaller HAZ, which is critical to the overall integrity of the line. Generally speaking though, much more 6010 is ran in vert. up open roots than downhill.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:in 35 years i never saw a pipefitter run anything downhill.. its the pipeliners that do that..

Reply:3" I would run a 6010 root uphill, and 7018 fill and cap, that would be in a plant, process or steam piping. If it was a job for a plumber, gas piping 6010 root to cap all downhill.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I understand that, but do you know how many jobs I go on where there is none of that. I asked a plumbing inspector " how do you want this welded, what is the procedure, and code" he replied with" as long as it dosent leak I don't care". I should have mentioned, always check the prints/documents first.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ." |
