Reply:FSW is relatively dated technology requiring tons, yes tons, of lateral pressure for material fusion in the solid state. A subset, SFSW, is used underwater via divers and ROVs for specialized applications."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:whats the plus of this type of welding ?

Reply:A commenter on the video says it is more like forging than welding. Says it maintains more of the strength if the parent metal. I dunno...Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!

Reply:I saw this process used to weld the pivot balls on the blade control cylinder shafts on Caterpillar motor graders. It looked more like a controlled crash between the ball and the shaft.  I never hear of any failing. Dan
Reply:I was talking to a couple of guys from NASA, they were using friction stir welding to join two halves of an aluminum space capsule, it required a huge burly fixture, it uses no shielding gas, and joins the metal with no HAZ because the metal stays below melting temp.SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A
Reply:Saturn was using this method on the drive shafts for there SUV's around 10 years ago.  I am sure GM was/is using it for some of there small SUV's as well.
Reply:This is how valves are welded together for motors.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMZ78iF5st4[/ame]This is also interesting![ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oAWQd2_dz8[/ame]
Reply:Inertial friction welding is used to weld stainless steel shaft extensions onto electric motors.  If you have a swimming pool pump motor nearby, take a look at it.  The shaft that projects outside the motor housing is stainless steel.  But inside the housing is mild steel.  This is cheaper than using all stainless, and the rotors are usually heat shrunk to the motor shaft with interference holding the rotor in place.  Getting that heat shrink right is easier when the motor shaft and the rotor are both made from mild steel.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:It looks like it makes it possible to "weld" dissimilar metals in a way that would be impossible with arc-based welding methods.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!

Reply:Isn't this the same process basically as using explosives to weld two dissimilar metal plates to each other?
