Here is today's fun.  The frame had cracked and someone had repaired it.  They put a patch over the crack and did not repair the crack or the flange of the frame.  It broke again.  Here are some pics as It arrived at my place.  From the insideAttachment 11567 Attached ImagesLast edited by David R; 08-01-2007 at 07:20 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:SO, I gouged off the old stuff, ground out the break and prepped the outside for repair.Check out the original welds.  Note they are down hill.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Frame was .167" if you can read a vernier.  I put a 3/8" X 4" X 12" plate on the back side and a 1/2" X 1" piece on the bottom flange after I welded it.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Here is the top bead, 3/32 7018 75 amps, then the second pass 1/8" 7018 130 amps.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Outside weld, verticle up 3/32 rod.  The bead is concave, but looks like its sticking out.  This is the first pass UP, 2 more to follow.  It must be an optical conclusion.  Its the first pass and not even close to flush with the plate.Overhead pics didn't come out...HONEST      The customer said make it look like it was never broken, so I did here is the completed job.  6.5 hours. Thanks for watching.DavidLast edited by David R; 08-01-2007 at 07:24 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Thanks great, love the crack right up through the original patch!Goes to show the severe detrimental effect of a "stress riser" such as a notch/crevice,  sharp change in thickness, or hardened area from a weld. The welds on the first patch were pretty rough, and no doubt contributed to the failure of the patch, but why did it fail the first time?  I suspect that the sharp transition in thickness created a kind of "notch effect" at the gap between the piece with the phone number and the fender bracket.  A poorly filled weld crater, or lumpy rough weld in this notch area probably also helped initiate the original crack.
Reply:There aren't many factory made trailers that impress me.   One good looking over usually finds enough places that are suspect either by welding quality or just don't look "right" in design or materials used.  No small wonder they develop issues with cracks and weld failures over time.On a different rant subject I have yet to see a factory trailer that is wired properly.  Scotch-Locs on exposed wiring are good enough to get them out of the factory but not much else.  I also don't think they spend much time getting them aligned right.  I've towed some that  were constantly jigging side to side.  The ones I've built and use daily, landscape trailers on a single 3500 lb axle, are set up square and true to the coupler and tow like a string.
Reply:Pulser, I agree, that is the weakest point.  The "hitch" part ends just ahead of the first spring hanger.  Hmmmm.  The patch was a joke, they didn't even weld or patch the bottom flange and that holds the weight.I didn't weld the ends of the 3/8 plate or the piece on the flange.  I was thinking of you.  NO HAZ for it to break at the ends of my plates.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Interesting, vertical welding to frames is...bad? I comprehend the theory, stress riser, huh? Some of the frame foibles we've seen since beginning in school at the beginning of 2006 have seemed like tests sent by God. We had a very talented fabricator up until he went into business for himself before that. There was this gooseneck trailer in particular, the whole goose neck had cracked on both sides right through a crappy patch just like the one you gouged out. It was hanging by a thread! We used 3/8" plate to sandwhich the crack repair, on both sides. We made 3 seperate 5/8" holes in the patch plate to create additional plug welds to give it strength in the web of the channel. Reply:In the original post, you said, "Check out the original welds. Note they are downhill."  What is a downhill weld and how can I tell it from a picture?  What makes it bad?
Reply:Oh Geeze, I JUST read the thread about Up vs Down welds that went into depth about the topic.  Thanks Hammack_Welding!!
Reply:How about a little "how to read a vernier" 101 using the picture of it you posted? I know I'd benefit from it.I keep coming back to look at that one optical illusion weld you have there, one time it looks convex, one time it looks concave! Neat! lol. Nice job, right up your alley too.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:David R..  I don't know about the other guys but that explanation helped me understand a Vernier and the reason for all those extra markings.  I am no Rocket Surgeon, I don't understand how it works but I know how to read it now.
