I did these 2 this weekend, mind you i have about 5 hours of welding behind my belt!  I have a lot to learn, my welds dont look so good right now. and it doesn't help I use the $90 HF welder lol.  Anyone have any tips on welding thick rod to thinner rod?  you can see the tree limbs are different sizes and welding them together gave me a headache cause the 1/4" would get hot much quicker than the 3/8" did and it would build up an ugly glob of weld before it got good penetration on the 3/8".
Reply:Looks good! You have way more patience than I do......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Looks good to me. What RaptorDuner said about the thick and thin.
Reply:Like raptor said. It's a bit like a slow flick motion from the 3/8 to the 1/4". It's not ship building, so you don't have to worry too much about full pen. welds. I do 1/4, 3/16 and even 1/8" to 1/2" all the time for wine and cd racks. Slight pause to start the arc on the 1/2" then push the puddle on to the 1/4". Are you MIG or FCAW? For ornamental stuff like that, you can aim right at the junction of the two pieces and just do a hot tack, move over a couple mm and repeat until your back to your first. Trying to weld all the way around, on something like this is next to impossible. A series of connected tack's works best.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Nice, graceful sculptures.  I like them.(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:thanks everyone, I'll try some of those tips this weekend when i make some more decor.
Reply:Did some more this weekend, I'm about ready to throw my HF welder out the window. That thing is inconstant.  Welding the same steel with the same setting will run ok one day and will run like crap the next day with the same steel and settings. Anyways heres the new ones.

Reply:Very creative.  Looks good.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:That's some pretty nice wall art. Thanks for sharing. As for welding two different thickness materials here's my two cents. I always start by favoring the thicker of the two with the angle of the gun, then if I still need a bit more heat on the thick side or less heat on the thin side I will pause on the thick and quickly brush across the the thin. A little bit of trial and error and it should come natural in no time flat.

Reply:Too bad you don't have an (or know someone that has..) OXY/ACE or OXY/PROPANE setup...  You could join those with some nice LFB (Low Fume Bronze) and the 'Brass Color' against the steel would look GREAT!Either way,... Are you using a dedicated circuit with a 20 amp breaker for the welder ?Very artistic.
Reply:haha i using a 15 amp with a 100 foot cord!now i got it on a 20 amp with no cord, seems to weld much hotter.

Reply:Theres a huge difference between HF wire and a good quality wire. If your using the HF wire and switch, It'll seem like you changed welders. Cool artwork !Beer has food value, Food has no beer value
Reply:Thanks guys, i got around to painting some of this stuff.Just got these posted up on craigslist.  i hope to get some buyers so i can make some more.
Reply:I like the heart...I was thinking that a cool way to hang it, instead of the chains....would be to cut and weld some small nails, maybe a 3/4" inch long or so, to the back of the heart.  So that you could either hammer into a stud or just press it into the sheetrock.  So that all you see is just the outline of the metal and its shadow on the wall.
