Iv got and old four trax honda, Turns out on one of the rear wheels the axle was loose and the splines stripped out, I pulled the cotter pin and tightened it with an impact and with that it seems to be holding.Since the axle and hub are shot I figure Id have nothing to loose buy running a bead on it.I was thinking about a little preheat and a silicon bronze arc rod? Iv used them a couple of time on cast and it seemed to work well. What do you all think?? Reply:I've welded on  cast iron drill press once, man what a pain.Hit it with a grinder and look at the characteristics of the sparks (flare & color)It took 2 of us, 1 to weld & 1 w/ a rose bud heating.A aluminum bronze filler metal or nickel rod will work.Plenty of cleaning; pre/post heat and peening were required.Good Luck....lolSemper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:Consider brazing instead
Reply:grab some nye rod ( not sure of the spelling or the numbers... sorry) anyways grab some nye rod and a ball peen hammer. now instead of laying beads just burn the rod in circular motions for about 2 seconds and then peen, let cool for a minuter or two. looks like **** but it works well. its the quickest and easiest method.
Reply:Cast steel to a forged axle..There is no cast iron involved here...Tig 70-S-2..or 3..Or whatever and forget about it....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:hey guys thanks for replies, A few years back a buddy of mine broke an arm on his cheap harbor freight sheet metal brake,it was cast and we preheated it and arc welded it with I think it was a nickel rod(but I dont remember for sure I do remember it was expensive because we bought 1 rod),and it held fine.I do recall it flowed out really nice almost like brazing.I have a call in to my buddy at LWS Il post what he recommends when I hear back. He mentioned like Walker "consider brazing" ...I may just bust out the oxy/act in the AM and give that a whirl....thanks again jimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
