Hey Guys,Recently been doing some side jobs for an excavating contractor around pittsburgh. Mainly Cracked excavator buckets for Volvo 330-360 size excavator. Recently Bought a Miller Big Blue 502D Deluxe CC/CV from RSC.(Still havent taken the RSC stickers off lol.) One Bucket the cutting edge was cracked all the way through. i gouged about halfway through, welded that side. Gouged the other side into the weld and welded the other side. Preheat around 200-250 deg used a scarfing tip to gouge the crack. Used 5/32 7018. Waiting on my Miller 12rc Suitcase feeder to come in at airgas to save me some time on these projects that require alot of weld deposit. The Guy that owns the local airgas gave me the 12rc for around $1600 (retail 2000), is that a pretty good number on that?? Anyone else on here to Bucket Repairs or Heavy Equipment Repairs? Thanks and Keep on Burnin ROd-MillerManJohnny Attached ImagesLast edited by MillerManJohnny; 05-25-2012 at 12:55 AM.
Reply:Well i do some of that once and a while but there are other guys like Expat who really do it on a Large scaleYou talk like a man who knows what he's doing as far as doing that repairOk you got the welder and the suite case 12 is handy too But gouging with O/A is a drag but it works..You will need a carbon arc gouging set up and a compressor it's much faster unless you go to plasma gouging which i did till somebody stole my plasma cutter If you have never used a cac setup use ear plugs and leathers because that is going to spit hot steel everywhere and sometimes into the damdest placesgood luck on your jobAnd welcome to the forumBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Yea, I have an air arc gouger. the problem is that my welder is on a pullbehind trailer and the only air compressor i have access to is a IR diesel pull behind. So when doing a repair in the field its either pull the welder or the compressor. I am working on investing in a compressor I can mount on my truck. Any suggestions on a good size compressor to use for the AirArc that will fit good on a truck?? Ive been getting by with a F-150 for a while but I am soon to invest in a 1 Ton Diesel which i will mount the Big Blue and an air compressor for the airarc. Also, any suggestions on a good dual shield or self shielded wire for these types of repairs??Thanks Alot,MillerManJohnny-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield
Reply:Ya i understand that problem that is why i got the TB 302 air pak so i did not have a separate compressor i have put it in my 1959 chey 3/4 ton 4X4 and on my Toyota tundra i just pick it up with my kabota tractor and set it in and go..Having your welder/generator/compressor all in one package does have it's advantages As far as your air arc = compressor output the cfm recommendation would be depend on it's size you can look that up using the make and model number but i would go with something a little bigger than what your requirements are so as to not over work it.... no oil-less those are trash .There are several articles on the forum about compressors and air arcI have been running Lincoln NR-212 in .045 but you might want to run forum search on fcaw/dual-shield wire alsoThere are a lot of people on here that have quite a bit of knowledge and don't mind helping peopleand there are some that are full of it But don't be afraid to ask questions if you can't find the answer with the search functionBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:There are some nice PTO driven or vehicle engine driven screw machines out on the market that will give you plenty of air for gouging, but not eat up a ton of bed space. The down side is they are fairly pricy when I priced them out a while back..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I personally have never seen someone pull two trailers like that. If it was legal it would sure be a pain in the a** to back up. Some of the Jobsites i work at are tight quarters around the work so that wouldnt be a viable option for me. I've seen the pto drives, they are very nice, just dont know if i have the money for one of those fancy things. not yet anyways-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield

Reply:See two trailers quite often around here. Dual utility trailers, campers and boats, etc.As for backing up, the idea is to just get both machines to the job site. Once there then unhook the rear machine, position the front machine where it needs to be, rehook to the rear machine and position it. Reply:Install a hitch ball on the back of whichever unit is going to be the lead which should be the heavier of the two. You'll need to add a trailer light receptacle on the back as well.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:load the welder and compressor on the tandem axle equipment trailer in the background of your pic.
Reply:In my 40 years, I cannot recall ever seeing a two trailer setup in PA, with the one exception of semi box vans on the interstates.

Reply:Duane, I've seen that only once in my life. It was in hellinois, but they were from another state. I'd like to know what the actual law is about that. In hellinois, it's whatever the cop feels like that day. Then it's up to you to take a day off work, go to the courthouse, pay for parking, see the judge, be found guilty, now pay fine PLUS court costs.......... or just pay the fine like the cop wanted you to in the first place!Hey MillerManJohnny, welcome to the forum. Nice machine, if you don't mind me asking, what did you give for it? I priced some units from RSC, and they seemed a little high. I also have the same compressor issue as you. But since I shut down my trucking and construction companies, and I wont be using too many more jack hammers, I was thinking about building a rectangle box for my IR 175. I would take the inners (motor, air end and fuel tank, etc.) so I could transport it on a trailer along with my Commander skid and gang box. Besides, things on wheels tend to drive off on their own around here.It still amazes me when I see guys getting work from excavating companies. Around here, most ALL of them have a welder and a guy to use it. Not that they know what they're doing, but they all do it. Good luck!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Stickman, the rectangle.box sounds like a great idea for trailer/truck mount. Let me know whenever you get around to it, maybe you could gimme some pointers. This particular contractor does have a guy or two that weld but they are not welders if u know what I mean. Whenever they have a fairly big project they Calll me out.-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield
Reply:Here in Utah they allow triple trailer combos. Usually you only see the semis doing it, but every once in a while, you'll see some old timer pulling a fifth wheel followed by a flat bed with the quads, followed by a boat. There's a bunch of people in town heading up into the mountains for memorial day, I'll try to find one of them, and snap a picture. The guys usually have Nevada plates |
