I've just started a new personal project at the shop today...Gutting the innards out of this 350 block took me a solid hour.. I was smoking hot by the time everything dropped out the top end. I kept blowing the 50 amp breaker every few minutes so I grabbed an extension cord and plugged the plasma into the 100 amp with no problems after.Due to the amount of my free time, this may take me a few weeks to finish.-MikeOh yeah, did I mention that it's going to be my new BBQ? Reply:I made the grill the other day... Took me more time that I first thought. I'm going to smooth out the welds a little then sandblast the heck out of it when I bring the motor to powedercoat.Oh yeah, the blue butt connectors worked great for spacers and they also kept the round stock from pulling as I was cutting out the bow tie shape. Reply:I don't know why, but seeing that block hogged out disturbs me...
Reply:So today I started on the lid.. I bolted everything together, trimmed the bottom of one of the heads and welded in a hinge. I still have a few gaps to address, but I dont think they will be any problem. After I welded it up, I tacked the heads in place, removed the intake manifold and started on a custom aluminum one starting with 3/8" plate for the base...Gonna do it, do it all the way. I'm not sure, but I think this manifold is going to take the longest of the whole project. To date, I am up to around 8 hours. Reply:Progress update:I started working on the intake manifold today after work and like I thought, it is going to take me a while. I had to have the intake tubes broke into halves because they are such an odd dimension, then welded together. The angles were something to think about as well. The angles took me a bit to figure out. I didn't want to screw the tubes up since I'm working with only a few inches of material to spare. Another thing that I didn't think about was how to hold the pieces in place on a floating platform without any help. There's were trusty ducktape comes in handy. I also ground the welds off where the the tubes would be side by side. I know someone will spot this one. But that is all I could do so the tubes would meet evenly in the middle. And here is my fuel pump with a modified BBQ valve with welded on copper tube so my motor can get some gas. -Mike Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I havn't done much to the BBQ other than welded up the Intake manifold and had some parts machined for me.. So here is the manifold before polish:I didn't like how uneven the welds turned out around the plenum box, so I rewelded them. I'll show more pics when it gets back from polish sometime after this weekend. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Unfortunately, this project was stuffed away for quite a while. So I decided to finailly work on it again and should be done by the 4th. I spent a few hundred dollars on ebay for polished aluminum covers and a pump. They will all be here sometime this week. I had to wash a few parts in our high pressure, heated washer. They came out pretty clean. Somehow, over the years, my fuel pump disappeared and I'll have to make another one. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Cool project. I could see you using the exhaust manifold/headers for the stack if you made it a smoker. Reply:All of my parts showed up today so after work I threw them on. One thing I noticed right off the bat is that the chinese parts dont line up as nice as they should. But it still looks nice enough. I had to do a little sanding on the timing cover to get the water pump to sit correctly. And I still have to mount the distributer and fuel pump. I wanted to polish the intake and carb at first, then I gave up on the idea when I thought about how much work it would turn out to be. I went and sand blasted both. Then I clear coated them. A few more parts from Ebay and I'll finally be done with this thing. Oh yeah... that was a good SB 400 crank that I donated to the cause. Reply:I made some progress last week and fabbed up some zoomies. I used 1 5/8" tube, glued to 1/4" plate and I burned out some bowties to hold them at the top.Because I was pressed for time, I couldnt get the gas worked out so I threw a grill in the bottom for briquettes. It cooked alright.. But they could have been alot farther away from the top grill. I'm glad I remembered to keep the exhaust valves open. It looked pretty cool, smoking out the pipes.Talk about alot of attention! Everywhere I stopped, people would come by and ask a million questions.Only a few more things to do to it and I'll be finished. Reply:I ended up going camping this weekend and took the grill with me to Fern Ridge (Outside Eugene Oregon). I figured that I could throw together a jib real quick like so it wouldnt take 4 of us to lift it out of the truck.. My pulley's broke and the rope was threatening to snap. So I had to leave it unfinished and head down there. I did manage to make a video of it smoking and added a little commentary.
