I am making up some new wear bars for my sons mini sled, I cannot find carbide locally so am wondering what other common items could be used. I was thinking of making the bars from 3/8 round bar and then welding on 4" pieces of either a small trianguler file, center punch, screw driver bits maybe even concrete nails and then grinding to an edge. How would any of these material compare to simply laying down some beads with hardfacing rods.  I just want him to be able to steer on ice and have some wear resistance to short spurts on pavement.
Reply:How about using regular wear bars from a big sled, cut off the mounts and weld mounts where you need them?Trim to fit length as well.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Cutting, grinding, and welding what you propose isn't "a bunch of work"? Originally Posted by musselmarkThey would cost around 100 dollars and need a bunch of work, I could pretty much make these for free.

Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveI see them on ebay for $40-50 including shipping fairly often if I recall.Either way requiring work, but this way you start with a lot more. I like the triangle file idea.
Reply:When I has sleds I tried welding wear bars.  Hard surface held up ok and high speed steel tigged on held up longer. I have not looked bur McMaster-Carr should have carbide shapes. They will have to be blazed on. No matter what you do the heat from welding and brazing will make the wear bar curl. I just bought new after figuring out self repair was too much trouble.  I do like your file idea. Dan
Reply:I would expect the hardfacing to wear much better than hard steel (or HSS), but being thinner, I'm not sure it would last any longer.Instead of carbide, can you get AR steel pieces locally?  Pieces of AR500 aren't that expensive on eBay.
Reply:I ended up making the bars from 3/8" stainless, tigged on the 2 5/16" threaded studs and then tigged the 3" pieces of triangle files. We went out on the ice and it steers perfect, we'll see how they hold up to pavement
Reply:You can buy carbide wear bars for mini sleds from several places. These are racing bars. They are relatively inexpensive. You can get them for around $50JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I built mine up late night xmas eve trying to get ready for my ride the next day. I had a bucket of used chain saw files I saved but I couldn't find them. So I used some possibly copper coated 1/4'' rods that I found instead. I used emery cloth to buff off the coating. welded them on and when I was done ran some quick slightly down hand beads with hard face. It worked perfectly. However ill warn anyone they will warp like spaghetti and make sure they are well supported when u weld on the studs, mine drooped straight down at the floor before I lifted my helmet up.Last edited by Doug247; 01-15-2014 at 01:23 AM.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:What does he have, I put a 6.5hp 200cc  clone engine in his and just studded the track, it would always get stuck on ice before
Reply:He has a Kitty Kat. My boy is 5. Ice is not so much an issue for us. Snow depth is. I built a lift kit for it last winter that helps a lot. But that thing still does not handle much snow. I have to pack a trail for him. It does not help that he has no throttle control. It is either full stop or pinned to the bar. I did not realize you studded the track. That is the answer to aggressive skies.
