My Welding Business has been going pretty darn good.  I made 1 handrail for someone, and now I have a whole list of people that want them.  Anywhere from 8' Rail(s) - 65' Rail(s).  Some are just standard rails, and some are really Ornamental. (My background is really in Structural Welding but I fell into this) I Cant Complain.  I dont have a lot of pics, but I figured I'd post a few. 41' of Gaurd Rail with 2, 4' Stair Railings.(Before Ends Were Bent to a "Lambs Tongue") Commercial Job in NJ.Rails For a Doctors Office NJ.Residential Job NJ. 30'Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Really nice. This is why I am wanting to learn to weld! I have a porch that could use some nice railing like that.
Reply:Will they pass code with that big of a distance in between the pickets? It's no more than 4" every where I've worked.
Reply:All my rails are to code.  which is 4". The doctors office rails are like an optical illusion there to code but look way more spaced out. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Some More Of What I've Been Doing Lately.  Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:on those dr. office rails they wouldn't pass code anywhere around here. Also here they would be required to conform with IBC (at min) which would require them being 42" or grater tall with a handrail with a width of 1 -1/2" OD space out from the guard rail 1-1/2" and mounted between 34"-38"  from the nose of the step and exstending 12"  level past the toe of the first step.Last edited by Dualie; 06-19-2012 at 02:40 AM.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Good job, you do nice work, as far as codes go, they're different everywhere. Have you ever tried forging a lambs tongue? Curl it down and taper it? It looks really sweet, I think it would really add a lot to your work. http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:Thanks Guys.  I appreciate the positive feedback.  I have done a traditional lambs tongue.  I like the lambs tongue style.  The homeowner wanted that "Point" at the return's.  Ornamental Ironwork (Like Everything Else) has its advantages and disadvantages.  I like being my own boss, its very rewarding to me to make a customer happy.  But then you get customers that you can never satisfy.  Example - I am currently doing a job for a Woman in one of those "Golf Course" houses.  you know the houses that are huge and gaudy with no trees in the area.  We  to make a long story short, She came up with a design, I am buuilding everything to her design, and she's never happy.  Thankfully Every little thing was noted in multiple contracts,  So, She deisgned it, I built it...  I told her before she started, she wasnt going to like the Rails, shes putting 10lbs of poop in a 2lb bag.  Dualie - On that Doctors Office,  I did not build those rails.  The Owner of the building called me because the rails were falling apart.  The previous Welder never painted them or primed them.  I replaced the "Cancerous" spots and sand blasted them down.  I did how ever replace the flag stone Treads and Prime and paint the rails before I re-anchored them into the new treads. This was just one of the spots on those rails that were "Cancerous" Rotted Out.Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Very nice work.regarding the pickets featuring the orniments, do you build them or buy them like that? Do you have picket twister for your twisted ones?Sorry for all the questions, I want to build two gates for the dogs and I really dont have a source for "railing parts". I assume you are purchasing your material somewhere local?ThanksAnthony

Reply:Nice work.  I like the way the step rails end on the bottom.  How do you measure between columns?  Did you fit them on site?    King sells some zinc slip-on fitting that slip on cap/channel combo.  I use them on occasion, they fit well and save time.Did you figure where the leaks were in the rail. Surely those rails burst and and then continued to rust.
Reply:Originally Posted by DieselDon16The Material was bought from a Local Steel Supplier 50 miles away LOL (Only Steel Supplier around) The Steel Knuckles were bought and I welded them on the Baluster's (Pickets)  I just found a desired height for them and welded them right to the baluster(s).  The spiral balusters were also bought from the Steel Supplier, there alittle more money then the standard solid square baluster.  Then came in 20' lenghts.   Check out King metals.com  The website is alittle confusing, but have them send you there 2 books, there like 1000 pages of all Steel, Aluminum, Iron, Cast Iron, Stainless... parts and accessories.  From a million handrail parts and accessories to Locks, to hand forged pickets,  they have everything. Also just a tip when you build your gate.  If you get something like Steel Knuckles (What I used on those big Rails)  Weld the rails together first, and leave the knuckles free floating on the pickets, then choose your desired position of the Knuckles or what ever you chose and then weld them.  There a pain in the butt to keep them all level and straight if you weld them to the pickets first then weld the pickets in place.  Just my .02.

Reply:Originally Posted by Dualieactually the IBC are the minimum codes nationwide.  Also the ADA requires that any facility's accessible to the public conform to the standards.there are several scumbags that go around this area looking for non ADA compliant facility's and suing the owners.   Usually an easy $4,500 in there scumbag pockets.
