Instead of a stack of dimes my welds look like a stack of arrowheads. If that makes sense. Is this a speed issue? This is 3/32 6011 horizontal weld 1/8 inch angle to 1/8 wall SW tubing table legs.

Reply:I'd say to fast of travel speed too.Try making a laid over J, the long part of the J on the flat / bottom of the weld. That's how I made this 6-G pipe weld. Reply:Your simply not pausing long enough.  And its causing u to move too fast.  When u whip back into it, pause for 1-2 then come out.  Just watch the puddle and let it fill out just alittle.  It will leave u a nice stack of dimesSent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Reply:Yup, too fast.BUT, that don't mean it ain't a good weld. Even the prettiest stack of dimes can fall all apart when tipped over if there is low penetration......Worry first about weld quality, then work second on looks....That "look" you posted is only a product of timing and hand motion that you can easily adjust and change the look of it, but it won't change the actual quality and strength of the weld.so worry first about how the weld performs, then about how it looks....Yes, you want both good looks and weld quality, but go for quality first, then polish how it looks.Hell, stop worrying about flipping the pics. They look like you done them uphill which adds to your cred I don't know what thicknesses you are joining or the capabilities of your welding machine, but many times you will discover that if you set your machine correctly and IF it is capable of dealing with the thickness of the pieces you are joining, then you won't be required apply ANY weave or loopy stuff, and instead simply use a steady and smooth push/pull along while you watch the puddle...always practice on scrap to determine the best settings and torch motion before you apply the final weld.Last edited by pigeonpoop; 01-23-2014 at 01:05 PM.

Reply:arrows tell me rod angle is too flat
Reply:Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful.
Reply:Here's a carport I've been working on. I welded all that red iron with 1/8 6011. That was a test trying not to burn through that 14ga.

Reply:Next thing you need to work on is filling the crater more, or make sure the crater is in the center of the weld. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:If you're trying to 'stack dimes' with 5P stick you need to whip out farther and let your dime solidify more before you add the next one.The second weld you posted looks fine to me, dimes or no dimes.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 01-24-2014 at 08:44 PM.
Reply:Crater? You mean in the weld bead itself or are you talking about the joint I'm trying to weld?

Reply:That's a great video, little things that I think experienced welders take for granted that everyone knows can completely change my whole view. For instance, I've been doing the whip and pause...somewhat, on my own. I didn't know it was called whip and pause because I've never heard it before I just developed it as I'm teaching myself to weld. Difference is I always whip out and pause to the right or left like a circle motion and come back. He's going straight down the joint in and out of the puddle. I have made some pretty( and strong) welds with my sideways whipping so I guess it's not wrong but I have problems sometimes with getting off line  or on thinner material burning through out on the edges. I think this will solve or help greatly those two problems. Will this also help my puddle to spread out more evenly thus giving me that "stack of dimes" look I so desire? Thanks for the video I like that guys videos but I've never seen that one.
Reply:If you try to stack dimes with stick you're gonna have bee-bees all over the place. Better off with that second weld you posted.
Reply:If you can sing to yourself, then pick a song that has the correct beat, and move your hand in a constant rythum 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 to make your welds more consistant. Because like Wille Nelson said, Without a Song the day might never end. Practice Practice, stay to the thick side if there is one and push the crack.Swanny
