7018 3G Practice Test (Pics) Please Critique

Well after i switched jobs (better pay, benifits such..) im am not currently welding for a living as i used to, but i will have the chance to get into the weldshop in the future where i work now. But i still weld at home and have my machines to play with Anyway, I did not do much stick welding it was all fluxcore(dualshield) mig, and some tig. But today i played with the maxstar 150 with some stick doing a 3g 7018 test. Reply:The few bend I've had to do, we needed to grind both sides. My guess is the reason your "bend" looks flat is because you failed to grind your face as well as your root. This wouldn't allow the piece to bend right and I doubt it stressed the weld as much because it couldn't wrap around as tight at the actual weld.If I'm wrong and it's normal to only grind the one side of the bend test someone please correct me..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:That's not the bend test I had to do for aws. Gonna try my best to explain this coherently:When I did mine they cut a coupon (I forget the thickness, around 1/4") thick, but it was horizontal. In other words with the plate in the 3g position, I cut a sliver from side to side, so you only have 1/4" of vertical weld. Then I ground the crown of the weld down flat, snapped the backing plate off, and in was bent in a similar fashion as yours. Its hard to explain, but it was a different cut of the plate, so when cut like it was, the weld was bent test in a different direction. Maybe someone on here can explain better than I. The way you did barely bent the weld, it only bent the plate, so the only failure would have been a snap at the weld.But the welding looks alright, you just really need to practice your consistency and fine tune your heat and speed. It will really come together well if you stick with it. I did my 3g in stringers (weave first 2-3 passes, then run roughly 3/16" stringers). Reply:Way too jittery on your progression Smooooooothe out your movements both side to side and your progression up. It should end up looking like you squirted the weld in with a caulking gun. Reinforcement at the cap should not exceed 1/8" (AWS D1.1)
Reply:If your doing a structural plate test, you will have to do a start and stop on your first pass at a marked location. For the CWB structural test we do here, you do a start and stop on each of the 2 root passes. 3 pieces are cut from your finished piece, the 2 outside Pisces are root bent against your stop and starts and the middle piece is face bent. Then all 3 pieces go off for xray.
