Reply:FlyingJ - good rule of thumb is to not weld metal thinner than the rod.A little thicker, like said above, is easier Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Thanks I was making a welding table with 1/8 7018 n I was using like 1/8 I beam either looks cold or droop out on vertical up
Reply:Remember with stick welding you base your amperage off of the rod size. One amp per thousandt of an inch. Or if you wanna do some math just turn the fraction into decimals. Like 1/8 into decimal form is: 0.125. So your amperage should be somewhere in that ball park for 1/8 rod. 125 amps

Reply:Here's Miller's Stick Welding Calculator. http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...calculator.phpAlways weld on a scrap piece of same size and material to set heat. Every machine is a little different. You can start at 125 and find out it's way too hot or cold . Go up or down accordingly. Numbers are only a starting point. 125 amps on a MILLER might feel the same when it's 150 on a Lincoln. Some guys like a hot machine and can handle it.
