Hi folks,Been a member for a while and I'm most active over on mig welding .co.uk but I thought I'd ask my question over here aswell.I have some tig welding to do over in Canada on a ranch of my family's in Manitoba. I don't currently own a tig, so rather than buying one here and taking with me. I was going to buy one over there and bring it back with me once I'm finished to the uk for 6 month until I go back again.I don't mind paying the import vat in uk but my question is can I bring it back on the plane with me? Either in my luggage or hand luggage. I'm hoping one of the overseas welders that might have done this before could give me a pointer in the right direction Regards M4TTSent from my iPad using Tapatalk HDOxford S mig 360A with custom wound transformer R Tech 250A AC/DC tig with ck flexloc torch and homemade water coolerPlasmapart 40A plasma cutterCustom built adjustable tig tableI raise beef to fund my welding addictions
Reply:The allowed carry on baggage sizes are way too small for a welder.http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelin.../carry-on.htmlPlus if they don't allow a printer, I suspect a welder will be a no go too.I wouldn't let those baggage handlers throw a welder around.I'd just ship it by freight.Properly crated, packed and so on.
Reply:You need to consider the fact also of, the power supply on this side of the pond is 60 hertz, and your side is 50. That might not be a good combo when you got it home. Unless that is, you can find one that is changable, or will work with either cycle set up. You might could consider renting one over here for the job at hand though.
Reply:A little Maxstar 150 could certainly fit in either one of your luggage pieces, and will run fine on both sides of the Atlantic.   You should be able to find one in the same day in any large(r) city, and easily get the correct MVP plug when you get home.
Reply:Maybe they can buy their own welder for you to use. Go with them and pick it out. It is for family so I kind of doubt you are going to get a lot more money to supply the machine. I could be wrong. What sort of welding do u plan on doing? Stainless? Aluminium?  You might need to invest in a water cooled, hand amp control tig torch, so u will need to get a cooler. Hopefully you are inside cause damn it gets cold here!Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
