I went to a job that I was told they had someone weld up the flanges and pipes to the lengths that I needed.  I usually weld up all the pipe but they wanted to save money and had a guy weld all of the easy parts for less money. I had to redo all the welds needless to say only  after I had to convince the company that the weld were no good.  How frustrating ..Well, I was just wondering if any of you have had the same thing happen. Thanks for looking Attached Images

Reply:That's pure ugly. Needless to say the flanges would leak cause the pipe is supposed to stick in bout 1/2 inch from face for the weld.Magicial Magician Of Molten Metal2006 Chevy Dually Welding Truck1975 SA-200 Lincoln Red SealMiller AEAD 200-LELincoln 225 AC/DC tombstoneVictor Contractors Flaming TomahawkProfax Tig RigMore pipe fitting tools to mentionMetabo's
Reply:Looks like a piss poor job of 6010 and your gonna need a **** load of gaskets too !On that buttweld, maybe he was just trying to make the top match the bottom !!!!
Reply:I am running across this problem more and more.  I dont think people know when a job is to much for them.
Reply:Often it is not a worker problems, you know, being not the ''best'' is not a problem to me, don't forget that this guy is only an employe, he do what the boss ask, maybe the boss don't care to much about the quality of the job!I remember a story, the company where i was working are specialized in railling and stairs and small structures (no big welding deals here, good welds and certification are required but nothing as x ray and critical like pressure gaz pipe)but one day my job got a contract for some sorts of bridge part with very thick plates, the job as to be x ray if i remember right its needed to be backgouged, the welder at the company is one of my friend, he told the boss that he never did that and we have nothing to do gouging, the boss told him without no worries ''well its ok do it with what we have'' and the job being refused 2 weeks after!is it the employe fault or the employer fault ? i think that's the boss responsabilities!Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:This job was done by the boss.  That dont say much though.  I know it dont have to be perfect but do it right.  This is why our insurance rates are ungodly.
Reply:I would fire the guy that hired him !  Guess he better stay in the office. Hope nobody gets hurt.

Reply:I do not weld for a profession rather I am an electrical contractor. We get requests all the time to "finish a job" or to terminate circuits that someone else ran to save money, or to tell them what they need to buy at Home Depot to save on the materials bill then have us install it.This is a huge liability and I always refuse to do it, and I tell them my insurance company doesn't appreciate me doing it either. As far as them buying materials I cannot warranty anything I don't supply. The only way I will "finish" a job that someone else started is by ripping it all out and starting over, just like you did with those welds.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:I fix junk like that almost daily :\
Reply:Well that is what I needed to hear, when you get on one of these jobs you feel like it only happens to you..
Reply:Yep, after a second look, it was done by Stevie Wonder. That's why the slip on had the pipe sticking beyond the face.
Reply:does this happen to me? Reply:Happens all the time. Someone thinks they can save a few pennies by doing the work in-house (they remember when they did the work in-house in the past, just forget they let all the quailified people retire/leave and didn't replace them). Just finished a job where we quoted all the work. The customer did all the piping instead of hiring us. After the pipe was installed it had to be flushed and pressure tested to 7500 psi. They hired us for the flushing and testing. If we had done the pipe work the flush and test would have taken two days. They had so many failures in welded joints we were there for over two weeks for the flushing and testing. I am sure they spent more trying to save a few dollars. Our bill for the flush and test ended up being about half of the quote for the whole job. Their "pipefitters" told me they worked on the piping for 7 weeks.

Reply:If i wold not have to be on site for start up i may have let them do it.
Reply:You guy are being too hard on that poor welder. Maybe he thought (pic 3) a raised face flange  meant running a bead so that it protrudes the face...As for the OP. I wouldn't redo anything. I would say " where is your scrap metal pile?" and " where are the new flanges and pipe?"
Reply:Its typical in todays world, especially when u pay welders 9.50 - 12.00 hr, Mcds pays over 11.....I charge ten times that, and there is no negotiation on my rates, it is what it is, if you dont like it, ill come in and fix it after the other person screws it up, i dont care......I forgot how to change this.
Reply:Besides the welds being piss poor, did he even square or two hole the flange ?
Reply:They did figure out you had to two hole them, as for square not so much.  I agree that this is the time to "shine"  for me and I dont really have a problem redoing all the pipe, it is more $$$ for me.  I do get more calls to fix things after someone screws it up than to just do it right the first time.  I guess I should be thanking these people??
Reply:Same deal here, had cheaper guy try, paid us more to fix his crap than it would take to do job in the first place.
