Found a Smith st 605   Heating tip at the local pawn shop  but I only have a Propane setup not Acetylene.   The 605 calls out as Acetylene.    Can i use Propane with it?   will it work?   anyone doing something similer? They have a MC 509   Handle and 6 tips   for $80  but the 509 has had a hard life.
Reply:You can try it and see if it works - it probably won't work nearly as good as a dedicated propane rosebud.  Unless you're doing something that requires extremely high heat output, you should be able to get the heat you need by just using a larger cutting tip in your cutting attachment.  Propane puts out an extremely high number of BTU's/hr vs. acetylene, which is why most people don't bother with propane rosebuds - you can get a tremendous amount of heat just by using a cutting tip for heating.  I'm assuming you have an SC series torch, so I would try something like an SC50-4 cutting tip for heating purposes. For the second half of your post, the MC509 is a cutting attachment - the MW5 or WH100 would be the handles.  I assume you mean they have a complete torch plus either cutting or welding tips for $80.  I wouldn't spend that much on a beat-down torch, especially if it's not a lifetime warrantied one.  (Smith made lifetime and non-lifetime torches - if they don't say "LIFETIME" on them, they're not.)  If you could get the set for $40-$50, now that's a better deal.Every now and then a seller on ebay will come out with a new WH100/MC509 torch for about $116 shipped.  I would wait for a deal like that if I were you.
Reply:I turned a Victor rosebud into an LP rosebud by adding a "flameholder". You can clamp 'em on too. I won't hesitate to do this to any rosebud in future. Went from "instant blowout" to "wave rosebud as fast as you can outdoors in the wind and stays lit".http://www.chaski.com/homemachinist/...p?f=12&t=86934 Attached Images

Reply:Spoke to Smith today.   The lifetime is only for the original owner.  They would not say how to prove it.   Asked them if they could repair the unit and they would not,  Said they only work on covered items.   Asked them to give me the name of an authorized repair shop for their product,  They could not.  said to just call my local shop and see who they use.All in All a very useless call.
