Hey guys, I have a horizontal impact concrete crusher witch I need to build up and hardface the primary curtain in. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, the curtain is a slab of high manganese steel, about 4 feet wide by 4 1/2 feet tall, around 5 inches thick. My question is ,what would be the best type of flux core or, dual shield wire to use to build this up. I need to build up 2 "U" shaped grooves wore in this thing about 6" wide by 2" deep.I know I can get stick rods to do this, but would really prefer to use my 12vs feeder, if possible. Any help would be much appreciated
Reply:I don't know how critical warping would be, but I think it will bend some w/ that much build up of manganese. I suggest peening every weld w/ an air hammer until it no longer looks like a weld. Over the yrs I had to weld up cracks in roll crusher shells 24" wide and 2 1/2" thick and If the welds weren't peened really good the parent manganese would crack on each side of the weld. I have no idea where to find manganese wire for what you want to do. We always used 1/4" nicro-mang stick. Reply:At the mine we have good success building our dipper buckets with 309L SS.
Reply:Contact a mfg. of hardfacing consumables (stoody, ect.), they will tell you everything you need to know from electrode selection, weld parameters, pre/PWHT, shielding gas...Have we all gone mad?
Reply:At the shop I worked we always done build up with stick. It went on good until they got a set up to build up rolls it had a drive to turn rolls and hold gun used flux core wire. They wanted to build up back plate in jaw crusher With flux core it wasnt good it looked bad. They said I didnt know what I was doing and called in and expert he looked at it and said thats as good as it gets. We peened every thing.

Reply:I don't remember the brand. The type was " nicro-mang". Try a google search. It runs real good flat but not well at all vertical. As I said it needed lots of peening to reduce cracking in the parent metal. Reply:I don't know squat about your application, but out of curiousity did a little searching and found this...http://www.crownalloys.com/TechSheet...ew_Warning.pdf
Reply:"Nicromang" is from Stoody (or was).Check Lincoln, Stoody, and McKay websites for recommendations on what product(s) to use. Or call their tech helplines and just ask them. A quick check of Lincoln's Hardfacing Guide suggests the following wires for build-up of manganese steel, and some cross-references to 'similar' products from other makers:Lincore M or M-1 (Stoody Dynamang or Nicromang, McKay 218-O, Rankin Ranomang2, etc, etc)Lincore 15CrMn or 15CrMnLS (Stoody, 110, McKay AP-O, Rankin Ranomang3, etc)Lincore FrogMang (Stoody TrackWear, McKay 219-O)Used to have the McKay and Stoody references handy, can't find 'em right now, don't feel like looking them up right now.Pre-heat recommendation from Lincoln is 100-200F generally for 11-14% manganese steel, and watch the interpass temps and make sure they stay below 500F to avoid embrittlement and cracking. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I use 15CrMn 5/64 60lbs for crushers i think Lincoln makes the best FCMW going and ive tryed alot of others trying to save some dought . Pre heat to 250-300 and *** stated use needel descaller to peen the sheet out of each pass and be shur to where a ventalator or you will be sick of welding fastAnother day in paradise You only have to be smarter than the metal".
