I started welding about 5 years ago. I've worked numerous different shops and manufacturing facilites doing MIG and TIG. Some places required very close tolerances and some places didn't. I decided to take some classes at the local tech school a few years ago but everything they taught I already knew or had done.I have also had numerous other jobs pre start of my welding career. I have come to realize welding is my passion. I am constantly reading manuals and literature about the subject as well as watching youtube videos. Pretty much every aspect of welding fascinates me even down to the science of it.So over the past few months I have been thinking that I would really like to delve deeper into the field. I deided I want to go into the engineering field and become a welding engineer. One problem has arose though, I live in Georigia and all the schools that offer BS degrees in welding are up north/midwestern parts of the U.S. Is there any way I can further my education in this field without having to move to where the schooling is?
Reply:I'm guessing engineers don't frequent this forum.

Reply:Well, if I ever do become one, I would never forget where I started. I used to work at a manuf place where we had one on the floor at all times. He was a total dick. He was the type to be like, "that looks like ****" and then walk away. Although whenever the owner of the company came down and had him weld something to calibrate some new machines, it looked like a beginner with no exp. He later talked the owner into dumping all the Millers we had (about 30 machines) and replacing them with some high dollar fancy german machines. Production was cut down to 60%. He was later fired.
Reply:Is there not a place called Georgia Tech for a reason???Can't believe they do not have a program for you considering ALL of the welding work being done out your way.

Reply:@ stackohdimes - trust your gut.  Go main stream.  Rip a Civil or Mechanical Engineer BS.  More opportunities.  Remember, "whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right."  Weld on the side while go'n the academic route."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Like "ManoKai", I would recommend you get a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. You get that degree and you can "go anywhere" in the engineering field.Craftsman Stick WelderLincoln 180c MIG welderHarris O/A gas welder
