I'm planning to build a cycle trailer 7'Lx5'W and originally was told 2x2x3/16 angle would be fine. Then I was told that I should use 2x3x3/16. Now I'm told by yet another guy to use 2x2x1/4.My trike weighs in at just under 1200#. I want the trailer lightweight but strong. I want to be able to remove the tongue and store standing up in my garage. (It will be a flatbed) Anysuggestions....and no "aluminum" is to rich for my pocket. Thanks.
Reply:I would go with 3 inch channel, trailers made of angle just scare me.  I've fixed too many that were broken (that I didn't build).
Reply:First, did you upgrade your welder or are you still planning to use your Eastwood 135 mig?Second, do you know how to design a trailer?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:If you were going to put rails on the trailer then any of those would work. If it's a flat bed then you should use channel. With the angle the trailer will have too much flex and flop back and forth.

Reply:If you are concerned about weight, tubing has a better strength to weight ratio than about anything else.   Disclaimer: I have never designed or built a trailer, and there are probably reasons why they are usually built with angle or channel.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:I'd use the 3" channel as suggested also, way much twist with anything smaller then 3".

Reply:The best way is to turn the channel outward. That way all the cross members are just straight cut. Here's a picture of one I built that shows the channel outward. Attached Images

Reply:The cross members on that trailer are not under the channel but butt to it inside. It is 3" channel and I used 2" angle welded to it.
