Anybody out there have any pics of a tailgate made out of square tube? Maybe covered with diamond plate? As many of you out there; once word gets out that you have done something for a friend ~ suddenly you have more friends!!!! This will be more of a tailgate than a ramp like you see on many of the utility trailers out there. Appreciate any ideas and pics.
Reply:here's a pic of a gate/ramp i built this past summer. 2 x 2 x 12ga. square tube. i think the expanded raised mesh is #9 gauge. lift handles and "hold-it-up" pins made from 1/2" round. the handles and pins go through both sides of tube and welded both sides. hinges made from 5/8" round and 3/4" pipe and removable to take gate off. "hold-it-up" arms made from 1/4" or 3/8" x 1" flat. no paint. 4' wide x 5' long. one screw up i made was not getting 5' wide mesh. got 4' instead. dumb mistake/cheaped out. had to use some creative engineering to fit that. IIRC the finished weight of the gate was around 150 lbs. Attached Images
Reply:Here is a pic of a trailer I did from aluminum with a tailgate/ramp. You could easily cut it down to just gate size. I don't have any pics on this computer, but what I've done in the past is make loading ramps that are the same width as the trailer and slide them into a channel welded to the inside rear of the trailer. That way they become the gate and are easy to get at for loading. Attached Images
Reply:Thanks for the pic and info! I was thinking of something very close to yours. Did you end up closing the open ends of the tube?
