1923 version of Kansas Jayhawk. The person this is being made for will be painting in all of the details.I think I decided tonight that I need some more clamps. In these pics I have a couple of jigs to line up the NS and EW, and then I tacked in another jig to square them up with each other. The welds weren't my best due to a failure with my welding helmet (not auto darkening as it should and I got flashed a few times). The yellowing between the welds is just the zinc from a collate I welded them to.I still have a bit more to do on it, but it will have to wait. Reply:Sorry, no pics of the jigs... maybe tomorrow. You can see them if you look real careful. Reply:Looks great! Does it actually point in the direction the wind is blowing?
Reply:Thanks.... it was driving me nuts... didn't see it was https.Due to the design, not sure if this will always point toward the direction of the wind... might point away too, but I haven't tested it. In theory it should, but the surface area is pretty well balanced.... perhaps a little extra surface area toward the rear, but you should really have much more surface area in the back than I have on this one. This weather vane is more for aesthetics than functionality. If it functions correctly, that is just a bonus. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:I was never sure if it is supposed to point into the wind (where is coming from) or with the wind (where it is going). Either way, I guess more sail area would be in the direction the wind is going. Right?Cool project. I may try one for the top of my shop.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:To properly design a weather vane that works as it should, the center of pressure should be behind the center of mass towards the tail. By following Mick's logic, it will weather vane into the wind...as this is what you want. |
