Just had 2 regs overhauled- (single stage I think)   they were about 60$ each .   Would yall say that was in line with the going rate ?  Just like to know if thats out of line or about rite !Thanks
Reply:I always wondered what it would cost and $60 sounds like a lot of money for something so small. Is this something that a person can do themselves? My acetylene leaks out if I forget to turn the tank valve off. Didn't do it at first but now I have noticed it. Does this mean that it needs overhauling? I assuming the hose and torch are fine since I close those valves down after use. The leak is very small like I can't hear it or smell it but after a few days my small WQ tank can go down to half full. I've forgotten twice now so far.edited; yes i know i should always shut the valve.Last edited by skulldrinker; 12-23-2011 at 03:20 AM.
Reply:Check all your hose connections with soap and water solution or Snoop. Do not use soap and water for O2, use Snoop that's rated for O2. Regs themselves seldom leak. Usually it's a leak at a connection, many times the connection between the reg and the cylinder. Lots of times guys tighten the pizz out of regs and F up the valve seat on the cylinder. Once F'd you almost have to crank the $hit out of them to get them to seal right. Occasionally you may F up the sealing surface on the reg nipple if you do this.$60 sounds a bit high, but with parts included on some regs that might be about right. I'd try OAdoctor here and see what he wants. Quite a few guys have had good luck with him in the past. Cost will depend on what reg you have.http://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/Acet and inert gas regs you might be able to do yourself, but never try this with an O2 reg. Everything burns in the presence of 100% O2 and high pressure. You won't even need a heat source, because the compression itself as the gas rushes in can be enough heat to ignite any contaminants in the reg. Oil, even from your hands, lint, dust etc is all it takes since conditions on the HP side of the reg are perfect to start a fire. A HP O2 fire is not an "oops the regs on fire..." It's a "BANG" and it's over most times. O2 equipment requires specialized procedures to eliminate contaminants.I was unlucky enough to be at ground zero for an O2 fire once. The "fire" vaporized 30 some inches of 1/4" HP  316 stainless tubing in an instant as well the fittings, literally in the blink of an eye. If that had been on a cylinder, it would have taken the top right off it. O2 regs are not a DIY project.Never and I mean never, use any lubricant or sealing material on an O2 reg that isn't O2 compatible. You'll still need to get the new reg parts anyways and deal with someone like OAdoctor to get them, so you might as well pay the small price the labor will cost..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:thanks for that info DSW I'll check the connections next time.
Reply:$65.00 is Kalifornia prices. I've had three rebuilt in the past and the all were right in that range. Nothing recent tho."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
