I was doing a job today and could not get quite what I wanted so I kept messing with the machine.  No joy there, so I tried a 1/8 tungsten shaped like a D.  It worked OK, but the arc was wide for me.  I went back to 3/32 red and black.  The sharpened tip or shaped like a D would look odd after a short time of welding.  New sharp tungsten and every t hing was fine for a  little while.  SO I put the arcmaster on 65% + wave, almose as good ad switching polarity on DC.   I then had a clean scrap lf aluminum.  I held the tungsten  about 1/2" away and floored the pedal 185+ amps.  It made a huge ball.  I tried welding with it but the arc wanted to jump around too much.   SO I did it again watching the tungsten a Lot closer.  60 to 90 amps were all I needed to form a nice round ball almost as big around as the tungsten.  I then welded it with that.  It worked well.   Just a shiny ball when I stopped welding unless I dunked it.   I just balled another one.   I had to watch really close  and hold the tungsten good and square to the plate or the ball would form off to the side.I did it with black which I think is 1% or 1.5%  Lanthinated or how ever  you spell it.I did it with some red too.  The ball held up perfect.I reset the wave balance to 30% + where I usually have it and welded away.Try itDavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I quit making balled tungsten in the early 80's. Just grind it to a dull point and start welding.  It will make it's own ball to the exact size necessary for your set up all on it's own.Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:I just put the tungsten in right out of the box and just start playing with the amps til it balls up!  Works great.  I only use green on aluminium!AEAD 200LE, Lincoln precision tig 185, Millermatic 251, Spectrum 625 extreme, Victor torch , Smithy 1220LTD. and  Do all C-4 band saw ,  Always adding.
Reply:I use red and sharpen it to a point to do inside corner welds. Then I just use a dull point to do butt welds. Not sure if that is the best practice thought
Reply:Poopie??? U gotta b sh*ttin me! Sometimes I ball tungsten in dc reverse over a block of copper.
Reply:Isn't 30% a mostly cleaning waveform putting most of the heat into the tungsten?  I run the opposite - 70-75% to get just enough cleaning action and maximum heat into the joint.- "If ya can't be handsome, ya may as well be handy!"   HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln SP125+Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38

Reply:Like Pangea  said  balling the tungsten isn't that big a deal especially if your weld current is up there.......170+  If your concerned about keeping it tight  use DC -  with lab grade helium.......With soot brushed off....Last edited by B_C; 12-23-2011 at 01:58 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Does anyone ball tungsten anymore?

Reply:The blunted point would quickly spit tungsten into the work creating an even more unstable arc than the balled version. I also had similar results with ceriated.
Reply:Looks like we are different.  I did another aluminum job today.   I tried it again balled and sharpened for mild steel.  I welded 16 feet of 1/8" aluminum lap weld.  If I form the tip by balling it, it stays that way until I dunk it.  If i use it sharp, the point degrades  before I have used one stick of filler. The ball stays clean and shiny.75 to 120 amps, red 3/32  90 hertz 35% cleaning 20cfh  yadda yadda  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I grind them to a point, and "let it happen capn' "Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:When someone says they're purposely "balling" a red tungsten, that tells me all I need to know about their "tig welding experience".Sounds to me like we've got a lot of "experts" on how to do things wrong.PS.  Mark my words.  In a week or two there will be a newbie posting up how to "ball a red tungsten" for use on an inverter.Last edited by SundownIII; 12-28-2011 at 01:59 PM.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
