I need honest opinions. I know I can pass the weld test that they make you do. Will I get paid more. Can I still work non union jobs if I join.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:You cannot weld non union if you join. You can do other non union trades though. You might get paid more you might work 3 less months a year and you might get benefits. Unions are good if it's what you want. I like to be close to home I don't like getting a call saying my names up head 2000 miles when there's a job at the house. But that is part of being a welder sometimes. Last I heard 798 wasn't selling any books so you probably couldn't join if you wanted to. Do you have the experience they have required? Not many welders have a ton of experience on big inch pipe outside of 798.
Reply:798 is slightly slow right now. In May there will be a huge boom and books will be sold. Or so the rumors tell, I usually stay home in Nebraska as a steam fitter. You can't beat the pay, I was on the ROW for 4 months last year. 30-40k a month.Last edited by RodBender; 02-18-2014 at 10:52 AM.Local 83

Reply:On 6 10's I was clearing about 32k a month. With $4,900 take home I believe. Of course you have to spend diesel to get to site, some jobs will comp .50 a mile. Hotels every night. Fast food most meals. Local 798 wages are $52.xxPer diem $105With a rig rate and diesel I think an extra $25 an hour. These are all close figuresI have buddy's working 7-12's mainlining making $1200-1600 a dayLocal 83

Reply:Probably. I've never heard such extreme taxes. The most I've ever paid is 20 percent tax. If the tax was that severe no one would weld.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk

Reply:5k a week is average/high for any pipe welder as take home it is possible to make more but not 40k a month unless you are straight contract. Taxes typically only come out on arm pay not per diem or rig

Reply:Combo pays more typically but your talking more plant and refinery work which will hire a lot of singlhand welders which doesn't pay very good. If you get a rig combo job as a non union welder you should make 5-10$ hr more than a stick only welder
Reply:That was $4900 take home a week. Cash money. I don't pay the helper.... That's been asked before Like Rifleco is saying, there are a couple "types" of rig welders. You can be on a main line tie in crew, doing hot taps, pump stations, or you can take your rig to outages at industrial sites. I have brought a rig to shut downs at ethanol plants as a combo welder to make SS joints, they paid for all my supplies and comped fuel for my rig every day. I was paid my local unions Area Forman ($39) wage with a rig rate ($15). With $110 per diem. Good money but still less than pipline money. In comparison my local UA hall has a $33 an hour scale for every one (welders, fitters, service) and I meet plenty of non union pipe welders getting paid $21-25 an hour no benefits, and the kicker is they have to be carbon and stainless combo welders, some of the non union contractors in the area want the high skill, bid the jobs like they have the best, but don't pay for the best. Local 798 members that work hard and are skilled always have work. There is a rumor that union construction hands are lazy and barely work half the year.Last edited by RodBender; 02-18-2014 at 09:20 PM.Local 83

Reply:Scratch start. Clip your leads on and go.^ same for me. If I have to tig, I usually need to keep my bottle close to the joints I am doing, the truck and welder can be outside or 100' awayLocal 83 |
