I'm out in Utah most of last week and this coming week so I took a "scenic drive" today up Echo Canyon, into Wyoming, down route 150 through the Wasatch National forest and landed in Park City by mid-day. They had their annual "Arts Festival" going on so I decided to continue with the touristy thing and stopped in. By the way, amazing scenic views out here I recommend it to anyone.. even the locals.Anyway, I spotted the tent with all the welded up Knick-knacks for sale and couldn’t believe the prices on the stuff.  The “dueling guns” are just some axle spindles, small punches, transmission valve body (maybe) and some scrap metal around the edges. It’s packaged up in a wooden box with more scrap metal and the price tag was $800. The screwdriver screw-up was $100 and you can see the fish with a rock center (a rock fish?) was $300.I know the answer is probably “yes” but will he really get what he’s asking for this stuff? I suspect he acquired all the parts at close to zero cost. But, who am I to judge art Edit: The last pic proves I was in Park City. They tattoo the mountains out here with the initials of the town. Not sure why, but I saw it everywhere I went. For aircraft to easily spot maybe? Attached Images
Reply:The painted markings was originally for aircraft, but way back in the early days when they did not have the maps and controllers and radios that they have today...the pilot would see the letter or letters and if they were on track then they could identify where they were and be were pretty sure they were going the way they planned. I live in Wyoming and used to live in Montana and have seen those markers in many towns... I think mostly it is school kids and in a class project the keeps these makers painted in kind of a community pride type of thing. As for the Art prices...it takes all kinds of people to make up the world and some are pretty foolish with their moneyWalt
Reply:16 junk screwdrivers not worth .50 ea welded together for $100 did you say Art or fart. what would anybody do with that ugly piece of junk. The fish is at least creative. But really it looks like arts and crafts stuff NOT ART.
Reply:The guns aren't bad, definitely could have gone a little farther with the detail. The screwdrivers thing just looks like someone got bored and welded a bunch of screwdrivers together. The fish is the only thing I'd see as art. I like the rock in the center, I think it adds character to it. As far as how much he wanted for them, that's completely outrageous. The level of detail is just so small.Northern Tool MIG/Flux coreWEL-BILT 4 1/2 angle grinderYou gotta start somewhere!
Reply:I like the guns and the fish for cost of scrap maybe.   Just see my previous post about the $10 million boulder in LA that they call art...  I think many of these "art" lovers are like the people in the "Emperor's New Clothes" fable.   They see something that is not there cuz some famous artist made it or says it is good artTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Art is in the eyes of the beholder, but if I can make it then its not art, those screwdrivers are just crap! The guns are alright, but $800? I know this is a welding forum but I have replica handgun that I do consider to be art. Made by a guy in his seventies with bad arthritis. Its a fully operational replica made 99.9% from wood including working wooden springs, its an exact replica made following the original blueprints and even the barrell is rifled. Now this is art!For those interested, it is a MK5 Webley revolver, he made 4 of these and this is the only fully operational one in the world. Its worth a heck of a lot more than $800 though.Cheers Andrew Attached Images
Reply:The pistols at the top are made from Harley shifter drums and transmission shafts.pretty cool but not $800 cool.
Reply:Art is art.....cost is never in the equation.A bunch of the engineering students at the University once made a slight alteration to the  building sign out from of the arts building. They added the "F" = FARTS.He'll get what people will pay for it. Look at the prices people pay at Christie's auction in New York. Some painting that looked like a four year old did it and they got $18 million for it......Art makes no sense at all where money is concerned.Make out of junk. Call it impressionist. Sell for big bucks and make more.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

That rock only traveled  at night, Got a video somewhere where it passed the house.  Some wack job in LA spending $10mil on a ROCK.   Originally Posted by soutthpawI like the guns and the fish for cost of scrap maybe.   Just see my previous post about the $10 million boulder in LA that they call art...  I think many of these "art" lovers are like the people in the "Emperor's New Clothes" fable.   They see something that is not there cuz some famous artist made it or says it is good art

Reply:" Me thinks that your interpretation of 'Art' is something other than the actual 'Definition' of ART! "No I don't think so I just find it very disappointing that looking at that box made out of plywood is demanding that kind of price when 50 years ago a craftsman ( not an artist ) built it better, out of higher quality materials. Here is a newer piece not art :http://www.adrianswoods.com/images/boxes/P1010012.jpghttp://www.adrianswoods.com/images/boxes/P1010012.jpgYou tell me do you want the "ARTISTS" box or the Craftsmans. Art is NOT an excuse to do crappy work, and that box and that screwdriver monster really don't show much creativity which "ART" is supposed to show.
