I take it these are both the same things. I am going to start welding on my maple syrup pan. It is 20 gauge stainless and as I understand it I could use some of these things. Do I use them as backups or just beside the weld? What would be best? Aluminum or copper. And what size should I get? Thanks Harold
Reply:They are backers. You can use copper or brass, you put them behind the joint your going to weld. The soak up excess heat to help prevent blow through.
Reply:How do you get them to stay where you want and still get your purge in there?
Reply:Just clamp them in place. For your pan, flattened cooper tubing may work good. For backing i would say use solar flux if there's room for cleanup.
Reply:I use aluminum backing bars on a daily basis with good success. I cant recall that last time I've welded 20 ga, but it works great on 18ga and up for me.
