Our training center had an expensive IV mixing hood donated to us by the local hospital. It was just collecting dust in storage, so my Pharmacy Technician Instructor asked for a donation & the hospital complied.Problem was, it used to sit on on a counter, so I had to build a stand. Next problem was, it was too heavy to move about much, soooooo, toss it in the back of the truck, haul it home & have at it.  I built this stand with the hood lying on my welding table.  Never did stand it up, until it got returned to the training center last night. The stand frame was made from 2" angle, then the legs were made out of 2" square tubing.  Mess up 1, the legs.  I should have used 1.5" tubing so I could bolt the casters on. So instead of bolting them on, I welded them to the feet.Mess up number 2, I didn't get the left rear leg at the proper angle spacing toward the rear. The foot is out by about a 1/4". Although this won't hurt anything, it doesn't sit up against the wall quite square. I'll fix that with a piece of cardboard against the baseboard.Mess up 3, one leg was an 1/8" short & it rocked as it sat on the floor. RATS!!!! I fixed it though. I put the caster plates on & left a slight gap then tacked it in place while it rested on the floor, then after it was tacked, moved it back to the table & welded it solid. No more rocking, even with the casters in place.Picture 4 shows the spacing of the front legs outward. The cabinet had a 2" piece of bent stainless that I didn't want to cut off, so I cut the front angle a bit longer. Then using a piece of 1/8" x 2" flat bar, I bent & welding it to enclose the end of the extra long angle. All 4 legs were welded to the frame at a 10* angle cut, top & bottom. Casters sit square with the floor & there is no wobble in the hood. Some Pics: Attached ImagesMarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:The hood is 6' 9" tall and the front legs are 34 1/2" wide.  Too wide to roll through a standard 34" doorway.  Here are a couple more pics:What is an IV Hood? This hood is a negative pressure hood where IV mixtures of chemotherapy drugs are made. Air is sucked in through the front open area & vented out the top through a filtering system. Many of the drugs are toxic to the mucus membranes (inside the nose, mouth, throat & lungs) & require filtering of any aerosol-ed components.Basically the pharmacist reaches inside the hood, the front shield slides down, all the chemicals are mixed & inserted into the IV bags. Then the front shield is raised, the pre-mixed bag of chemotherapy is finished & released to the floor for administration.I remember a previous place I worked how proud they were of finally purchasing an IV hood similar to this for around $5000. That was in 1991. This is an expensive piece of machinery which we get to use with our Pharmacy Technician training program. The top holds the ventilation motor & filtering system & is controlled by switches on the front. Reply:Well, it was too heavy to lift off the table & test.  If I had a cherry picker I could do it, but it's just me in the shop, no lift.  And I wasn't thinking when I welded it solid.  I realized what I did after I welded it.  Should have ground out the welds on 3 sides, straightened the leg & re-welded, but it was just too hot in the shop (115*).I know that's just an excuse.  And it will happen again, LOL.It works ok and the hood only weighs about 100 lbs, doesn't wobble on the casters, so I think I'm good.  Not good enough for production work, but good enough for the girls I know.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
