Hi all!   Been a while since I've been on the web.  I was fortunate enough to be chosen from my company to go thru Nav/Sea.Navy welding certification.   I'm in day 3 and thing are going surprisingly well.   We're tested in 2,3,4 and 6 G for 11018 stick and 2,3,4G for .052 dual shield. The Navy has a lot of particulars that I'm not used to like the weld face can be no higher than 3/32"  pre-heat and interpass temps of 175-325 deg. My question is has anyone else welded under Navy Guidelines.   Is there any tips or tricks that may be handy to know. Btw Happy New Year my Welding Web friends :-)“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:I am a civilian welder for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in VA and have taken those tests. In my tests for the 11018, there was no pre-heat or interpass requirements to worry about. I basically used my own judgement on interpass temp and set up all 3 plates at once and jumped around. With the dual shield wire I will warn you that the easiest test is by far the hardest. For some reason the horizontal flux core plate shows slag inclusions on the x-rays. For this reason, they allow 4 fails and 5 tests on that one. the others are only 3. On the horizontal, use 2 root passes and keep the first on small and leave plenty of room for the second pass. Most of all, don't panic, they want you to pass and will help out and give any advice they can. Don't be cocky and ask questions and you will be fine. If you are going to Puget Sound to test it may be different than here. Good luck.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:Thanks for the info NHMatt. They wanted us to make the root on the 2g, well all plates for that matter in one pass.  I belive it was 3/16th opening for the root.   I took a pick of my 2G 11018 on the second and 3rd pass.  The second pick is an example of what they expect for a cover pass.    Towards the top of the plate my cover pass was barely over the allowed 3/32" so they wanted me to sand it down????.   That was my second time taking the test.   The first test was rejected because it had a grind mark on the face of one of the plates near the cover pass. Reply:I would have preferred to do it in one pass but they had a larger root opening to make us use 2. We also had to sand down the caps to get it below 3/32. The list you see in my signature are the qualifications I have with the Navy so far. The Pulse arc had to be ground flush and UT'd instead of x-rayed. There are a bunch more to come after my Nuclear training class next week. After that I'll be going back to welding school for all my tig quals.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V

Reply:Thanks NHMatt and DSW  I took a 7 hour training class and test today going over Navy NAVSEA compliance specs and procedures.   I learned a lot.   Not just about what the Navy expects but things that aren't talked about too much in the field.  The first thing our instructor made sure we knew is if we are working on vessel and someone stops and asks me what am I working on.  I need to be able to tell them the military standard and class I am working under. Also the the amount of joules im using and how to calculate joules.(heat imput into the weld joint)If I am unable to answer then I could be thrown off the boat.  Basically any part of the fitting welding procedures I need to know all the details.  I only missed 1 question on the exam and that was because I could not understand the wording of what was being asked.  It's great thinking I would be pushing myself futher than before.  We were also told were getting all new machines to weld with.   Its about time.   Some of those old lincolns are 20-30 even pushing 40 years old.  Nothng worse than getting to work at 4am or 5:30am in the morning rushing over to the boat to claim a machine.  Running your leads 300-400+ ft only to find out the power source is bad and then having to hopefully find another machine and re run the leads.  With all the work we have were always short on machines.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
