Ok guys, here's another mig like tig.  Just fooling around on the bench. Attached Images
Reply:Bead looks "pretty", but it looks cold to me. The "dimes" are too tall. What settings were you running and on what thickness? As an aside, not directly related to your welds:My biggest issue with this "Mig like  Tig" thing is that it's super easy to make "pretty" looking welds with this method if you turn down the heat.  You end up with no penetration and a very poor weld. I think way to many guys latch on to this as a "shortcut" to getting nice welds. What they really need to do is put in the hours it takes to really learn how to weld, but that means hard work and frustration. I'd rather se a nice smooth mig weld like someone like Dan here can produce over "pretty" mig like tig welds. ZT can pull this off because he has the skills to do it and has gotten his skills to the point where he can make solid welds 1st and then make them look the way he wants. There's a lot more to it than just looks.Rant over..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Looks like tack tack tack. Almost none of the toes are tied in. I bet the penetration wasn't very good on that.

Reply:I am going to stick my neck out and say it appears to me there are sections of the coupon that have toe tie in.  My instructors told me (15 years ago) to look for parts of the weld coupon that are really good and try to replicate that.  It takes allot of practice to understand what they meant but the muscle memory does come, and I am no spring chicken. IMHO,  BOP 101 is doing allot better than many I have seen and I wager better days are coming.GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:One of the things I like about a good MIG weld is that it will really smooth up nice if done right have good penetration. I think the nice smooth straight run MIG welds look better on projects. Just my opinion.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.

Reply:Nice looking weld Gerry.  And people say you can't make nice welds with FC wire. Settings and material thickness? My 1st guess would have been dual shield or MC wire rather than "traditional" FC. I am guessing you are using more than a 200 amp class  machine..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:What do you mean go "backwards"?Are you saying aim the gun back towards the finished weld when moving along? From what I gather this way does not get as good of penetration as aiming the gun forward or strait at the joint when moving. What it does is pile up the filler on top of the base metal.
Reply:i agree with gerry entirely. Run a mig gun like its meant to be run, gerry has shown a perfect example of how a mig weld should look. Personally i dont run mig guns very much anymore as we spend all of our time running tig/stick in the boiler. Focus on trying to run a proper weld rather than trying to replicate this "tig like mig" look, if you want a weld that looks like tig, then get a tig welder.

Reply:This topic has been beaten and argued to death, it is not the only go to way to approach a weld, but there is a time and a place for it at least for me. Would you use a drag tecnique with dual shield on every job or project you go about, no, nor would you use this tecnique. As far as decorating a cake, fuk yeah, as welders we are proud of what we have practiced, and perform a trade that most people don't even understand, and we like to show off the efforts. Just like you did by turning this whole thread around so you could post the beautiful pics of your dual shield throw downs, and yes they are beautiful bud  Me personally I rebuild heavy equipment through the boilermakers union, most of our work is nasty, greasy, wrecked equipment beyond belief. I run a lot of different stick, and our migs are set up with dual shield. But if i'm gonna do some work on a 57 chevy full blown race car where asthetics and eye candy come into play espescially on your price, i'll throw a little mig like tig at the eye catchers. Reply:Dual shield isnt a good comparison to hardwire mig because you never whip and pause dual shield. There's a big potential for slag inclusion if you start doing weird stuff that you can get away with on slagless hardwire. There's nothing wrong with either way if done right.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
