I'm starting out and would like start with FCAW since most of my welding will be outside. So what is a good beginner wire in terms of brand, size and alloy. Plus I could also use suggestions for Gas Mig?BTW my TA181i should be here Thursday
Reply:lincoln nr 211 .035 burns nice and slag chips off like a 7018 great wire ..... are you asking for a gas to user or a machine ? if its for a gas i would go with staight co2 or c25Last edited by assassin_works; 01-24-2012 at 03:11 PM.Lincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R
Reply:Lincoln's NR-211, NR-212, and Hobart's 21-B are all great general purpose self shielded wires. The size of the wire will depend on how much horse power your machine has. Remember with flux core SS you'll get just a little more bang per amp over Mig.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:if you doing non code work and just looking for an easy to use wire for thicknesses up to 3/8"  NR-211 is about the easiest wire i have ever runVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Been using esab coreshield 15 .035 for years .  Weld mostly galvanzed steel burns in real good, just ran two ten pound spools thru the 181i the last two weeks.  Welded 1/8 up to 1/2 mounts on new milking parlor stalls.  Had the manufactor of the stall here to help with the installation by the second day he was only using my 181i instead of his lincoln ranger and wire feeder.  So I had to weld the ss with the maxstar 152 instead of the 181i like I wanted to do

Reply:Thanks for the advice. I went with a spool of NR-211....but to be honest the splatter and slag is killing me.It won't be long before I get a bottle!
Reply:If you have a lot of splatter. Check your polarity. Nr211 is Negative on the wire.If you are set on positive it will weld real bad with lots of splatter. Also when welding move in an oval, The second pass will fill in and float the flux to the top.
